Wildlife artist Raymond Sahtila featured in Arts Council exhibit

NORWICH – The Chenango County Council of the Arts, Norwich, announces the opening of its fourth exhibit of the 2009-2010 season. Noted wildlife artist Raymond Sahtila will present 43 of his works, depicting everything from African lions to Mandarin ducks.
An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft galleries at 27 West Main St.
Sahtila is a graduate of the New York School of Art and Design, where he studied to become a commercial artist. He soon realized his true passion and calling was wildlife art and thus began to pursue his dream.
Hailing from Westchester, he relocated to central New York to be closer to nature and the local wildlife that is abundant here for his artistic inspiration. He has displayed his colorful artwork in many small museum galleries and venues. He has received prizes in various competitions, one of which was the prestigious “Animals In Art” at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wisconsin, where he received accolades for his realistic rendition of a silverback gorilla. Sahtila has donated artwork to the Bronx Zoo to raise funds for new and innovative habitats for the zoo’s resident animals. He has also served on their Board of Directors.
Recently, he has been branching out and depicting the more exotic species, but his forte remains birdlife. He is a naturalist and conservationist who has great concern for the world’s animal life. By painting these examples, he hopes to bring awareness to the natural world around us.
The exhibit will run from Jan. 29 through Feb. 18. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. or by special appointment at 336-2787.
