WEST WINFIELD – Sherburne-Earlville defeated Center State Conference Division II leader Mt. Markham on Friday, and moved to within one game of the Mustangs in the standings.
In a game of runs, the Marauders (5-3, 8-7) had the last one, a 6-0 salvo to break away from a 55-54 game. Cameron Yerton hit a three-pointer, and Sean Boise converted essential free throws to close out the win.
Early in the game, S-E finished the first quarter on a 12-1 salvo, and built its lead to 30-14 with three minutes left in the first half. Mt. Markham bundled together an 18-2 rush to knot the game by halftime. “I felt we showed a lot of character, especially on the road, to bounce back and play a good second half,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard.
Boise led the Marauders with 25 points on 8-for-13 shooting, and Yerton scored 11.
S-E hosts Waterville on Tuesday.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley regrouped in the second half, and erased Cincinnatus’ seven-point halftime lead to win for the 11th time this season.
Dusty Davis came alive with a career-high night. Davis, who was averaging under 10 points a game coming into the contest, was mired in a recent scoring slump averaging just 5.5 points over the last four games. The junior forward broke through in a big way netting 34 points.
“Thirty-four points is a big night for anybody,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “(Davis) had been struggling to find his range, but he was able to take the ball inside, and did a nice job for us.”
Ethan Rounds added his second straight double-double finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds. “Cincinnatus came to play tonight, and they gave us more than we could handle in the first half,” Loomis said. “We made a little adjustment at halftime, and tightened up defensively.”

WALTON – Tyler Magnis scored 25 points for Walton, and had 14 of those markers in the opening two quarters as the Warriors fashioned a 32-21 halftime advantage.
“They came right out and led 7-2, and I think we were a little shocked early on,” said Greene coach Jeff Paske. “We turned it over to much, and they were able to convert.”
Greene had a steal and layup from Scott Gorton near the end of the half to close a big deficit to 11 by halftime. A strong third stanza by Walton upped that margin to 20.
Mark McDermott led Greene with 17 points, who play at Unatego Wednesday.

MORRIS – G-MU was held to its all-time low point total in converting just five field goals against Morris’ tough man-to-man defense.
For their part, the Raiders gave up just 69 points in two games against the Tri-Valley League front-runner. “They have the best size in the league and they’re athletic,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman of the Mustangs. “When you hold an undefeated team to that many points, wow, you think you would have a good chance of winning. We weren’t even close in either game.”
No player on either team reached double figures scoring with Morris’ Jared Weidman’s eight points the game-high. The Mustangs scored 20 in the opening half, 12 of those come on three balls – two from Weidman.

WESTPORT – B-G coach Ben Nelson brought his team to one of his former stomping grounds, and Nelson’s Bobcats came up short Saturday against the state-ranked Eagles of Section VII.
Westport busted out to a 22-4 lead at the outset, and led 35-15 at the break behind 16 points from Nate Gay. Bo McKinley scored 16 in the second half to help his team maintain its lead. Over the final two quarters, B-G (5-7) held a 34-27 advantage.
“Their two good players (Gay and McKinley) killed us, although the bus ride (four hours) wasn’t too good either,” Nelson said, who worked at Camp Dudley in Westport for several years, and was an assistant girls varsity basketball coach for Westport as well. “We knew how we wanted to defend McKinley and Gay, we just didn’t do a very good job of stopping them.”
McKinley finished with 28 points and Gay 24.
Justin Pepper had 15 points to lead B-G, who play Delhi tonight.

NORWICH – For Norwich, putting a ball through the hoop against the Oneonta defense was nearly as tough as cracking the vaults at Fort Knox.
The Tornado had just three field goals the entire second half – one of those at the game-ending buzzer – in Friday night’s defeat.
Oneonta blanked Norwich in the third quarter outscoring the Purple 15-0. It turned a tight game at halftime, 19-16, into a blowout. Norwich committed five turnovers during the quarter, and rarely had good looks at the basket against the ‘Jackets’ extended zone defense.
“We just needed to be stronger with the ball,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett.
Sienna Wisse hit two three balls in the third quarter, and Erin Wolstenholme also canne da three ball during the stanza. Wisse was 4-for-5 on three-point attempts and finished with 14 points. Wolstenholme led all scorers with 16.
The Tornado played without leading scorer and rebounder Hannah Runyon, who will miss the rest of the season after suffering a shoulder injury in last week’s road game against Johnson City. Leading Norwich was Bryn Loomis, who finished with eight points.

OXFORD – Oxford set the stage for this Wednesday’s divisional showdown with Harpursville beating the Storm at home on Friday night.
Oxford’s bench contributed 24 points to actually outscore UV. Haley Witchella led the way for the Blackhawks (12-2) with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and six steals. “Tonight, the story was the balance as a team,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. Palmer noted that four players finished with eight or more points. “We wanted to come out and play well from the start, and we were able to do that.”

MOHAWK – Sherburne-Earlville avenged an opening-game loss to Mohawk – one of just two defeats for the Marauders this season – in Friday’s contest.
S-E’s leading scorers this season, Bridget Irwin and Caitlynn Adams, had just 13 combined points in the initial meeting. This time, the duo had 33 total points with Adams scoring 21 and Irwin 12. Adams had seven and Irwin five in the last quarter as S-E built its lead to as many as 11 points.
Kristi Irwin scored 11 for the Marauders, five of those coming in the third quarter, and Adams pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds.
Saturday, the Marauders overcame a turnover-laden first half to pull away from Mt. Markham in the fourth quarter.
Kristi Irwin hit two threes in the last quarter, and Bridget Irwin scored six points as S-E outscored the host Mustangs, 17-9, over the last eight minutes of play.
“Things weren’t going our way, but we made the plays we needed to make to win the game,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan.
Mount Markham was within two points of S-E at halftime, and Mulligan said her team committed the most turnovers of any half this season.
Adams had 13 in the victory, Bridget Irwin scored 12, and Kristi Irwin 11.
The Marauders play at Waterville Wednesday.

OXFORD – Oxford set the stage for this Wednesday’s divisional showdown with Harpursville beating the Storm at home on Friday night.
Oxford’s bench contributed 24 points to actually outscore UV. Haley Witchella led the way for the Blackhawks (12-2) with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and six steals. “Tonight, the story was the balance as a team,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. Palmer noted that four players finished with eight or more points. “We wanted to come out and play well from the start, and we were able to do that.”
Oxford hosts Harpursville on Wednesday.

MOHAWK – Sherburne-Earlville avenged an opening-game loss to Mohawk – one of just two defeats for the Marauders this season – in Friday’s contest.
S-E’s leading scorers this season, Bridget Irwin and Caitlynn Adams, had just 13 combined points in the initial meeting. This time, the duo had 33 total points with Adams scoring 21 and Irwin 12. Adams had seven and Irwin five in the last quarter as S-E built its lead to as many as 11 points.
Kristi Irwin scored 11 for the Marauders, five of those coming in the third quarter, and Adams pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds.
Saturday, the Marauders overcame a turnover-laden first half to pull away from Mt. Markham in the fourth quarter.
Kristi Irwin hit two threes in the last quarter, and Bridget Irwin scored six points as S-E outscored the host Mustangs, 17-9, over the last eight minutes of play.
“Things weren’t going our way, but we made the plays we needed to make to win the game,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan.
Mount Markham was within two points of S-E at halftime, and Mulligan said her team committed the most turnovers of any half this season.
Adams had 13 in the victory, Bridget Irwin scored 12, and Kristi Irwin 11.
The Marauders play at Waterville Wednesday.
