MAC Championships
GREENE – Greene was not as dominant as in years past, but still finished on top in winning a fifth straight MAC team championship Friday night.
George Flanagan had three first-place finishes and one second-place result to lead the Trojans, and Alex Trass was first in two events, while adding a runner-up place finish.
“We knew the league was much more competitive this year, and we had to juggle the lineup a bit,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “We put swimmers in events that other teams weren’t expecting, and it paid off in the end.”
Flanagan and Trass were two components of the winning 200-yard medley relay that gave the Trojans their initial win of the day in the opening event. Also in that quartet were David Sevey and Ryan Ludwig.
Flanagan’s two individual victories came in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.35) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.96). Trass’ other first came in the 100-yard freestyle (54.48).
Cooperstown, who was second to Greene (319 to 286) split all of the first-place finishes with Greene with the Redskins actually capturing eight of the 12 events. “We talked to the swimmers about each lane in each event being important, and once again, our depth was the difference,” Platta said. “We weren’t as dominant as we have been in the past, but we scored points where we needed to score them.”
Afton/B-G/H/S was third with 247 points, and S-E was fourth scoring 212.
