Open House/Third round of Restore NY aims at commercial structure
NORWICH – City officials met Saturday for an open house to showcase the newly-constructed home at 52 Fair St., made possible by grant money awarded the city through the Restore New York program.
They also discussed the upcoming rehabilitation of the commercial property located at 24 East Main St. The second round of the Restore New York program provided the city with approximately $300,000 to revitalize downtown properties considered unsightly or unsafe.
While the houses located on Fair and Waite streets remain on the market, for $108,000 and $100,000 respectively, the 23 Grove Ave. home is now in the final stages of being sold.
RL Yale Construction owner Ricky Yale said the Fair Street project took between four and a half to five months to complete, and commented that the construction “went really smooth.”
“The layout is just so user friendly,” said Yale. “These homes are extremely energy friendly, including a furnace that is 99.9 percent efficient and other energy saving appliances.”
The third round of the Restore New York program will see the city receiving a minimum of $200,000 in grant money, in addition to $30,100 provided by the city, aimed at renovating the former Frames Unlimited shop on East Main Street, according to Planning and Community Development Specialist Todd Dreyer.
Dreyer stated that the city has reopened its search for proposals concerning the purchase and rehabilitation of the property, and added that “this is a great opportunity for a small business interested in a downtown location.”
“Since the city is primarily interested in attracting a viable business, with employment being an important consideration, the sales price is expected to be considerably less than the funding put into the building’s rehabilitation,” said Dreyer.
Those interested in submitting a proposal, or seeking more information, should contact Dreyer via e-mail at tdreyer@norwichnewyork.net. Proposals are due at Norwich City Hall by 4 p.m. on Monday, March 15.
