Norwich native musician returns for Friday show
NORWICH – Friday night will find former Norwich resident Denny McCormick performing in his hometown for the first time in decades. The long-time New York City resident will return for one night only on Feb. 5 at the Blarney Stone Pub.
Following his graduation from Norwich High School in 1972, McCormick relocated to New York City to pursue a career in music. That decision has gone full circle now, awarding the guitarist and songwriter the opportunity to return to his hometown with a fresh batch of new, original music.
“I’ve never questioned my decision to move away from home, but as I’ve begun writing again it seemed like a great chance to come back and try out some of the new material,” said McCormick.
Influenced by greats such as James Taylor, the Beatles, the Eagles, Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell, McCormick stated that he “was never really a part of the band scene” which flourished in Norwich in the early seventies.
“I’ve always been more into songwriters,” commented McCormick. “I strive to create that intimate atmosphere, that personal connection with the audience.”
“It’s going to be fantastic,” said Norwich musician Brad Jewett, guitarist for the Foreheads, who will be opening the Feb. 5 show. “I’ve known Denny my whole life; he’s a first-class musician.”
The Foreheads also feature acoustic guitarists Mike Craven and Scott “Scooter” Kruger, while Jewett tackles the electric guitar duties. Performing the likes of Tom Waits and John Hiatt, among others, the Foreheads are “lyrically into some pretty heavy stuff,” stated Jewett.
Jewett added that he’s excited for the band to join McCormick for the third set of the night, jamming on a variety of material.
“It’s going to be a great night of music,” said Jewett. “Denny weaned himself on learning material that other people just didn’t, or couldn’t, play. He is such a talented lyricist and performer.”
Denny McCormick, with special guests the Foreheads, will perform from 7 to 11 p.m. on Feb. 5 at the Blarney Stone Pub, 26 South Broad St. There will be no cover charge. For more information, contact the pub at 336-2630.
