Norwich clinches at least a tie for STAC division title

Norwich 67, Owego 49
OWEGO – Making its longest road trip of the season, coming off an emotional win earlier in the week, and playing with two starters out of the lineup, a subpar performance for Norwich was a distinct possibility.
Instead of any type of letdown, the Purple Tornado (12-1, 14-2) blitzed Owego in the first quarter outscoring the Indians 20-6. After that, Norwich was able to relax and cruise to an 11th straight Southern Tier Athletic Conference league win, and 11th straight over Owego. The victory also assured Norwich of co-Central Division champion status. Assuming Maine-Endwell is able to get by Oneonta this Wednesday, M-E and NHS will meet for the outright division title in a playoff game Friday, Feb. 12.
“It’s a long way from 1-1 (in the division) to being 12-1 now,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “That’s a lot of good basketball over the last two months.”
Abbott admitted it wasn’t and ideal situation missing starters Casey Edwards (away on a college visitation), and Andrew Austin (illness). Seth Thomsen and Alex Williams stepped in as starters, and maintained Norwich’s high expectations on the defensive end of the floor.
Offensively Josh Borfitz and Richie Bonney combined for 48 points. Borfiz hit two early three balls and scored nine in the first quarter, while Bonney tacked on seven. Borfitz, who had just 26 total points over the last four games, scored a career-high 30, a night that included five three balls. Bonney was just a shade under his scoring averaging netting 18 to go with 12 rebounds and six blocked shots. Thomsen snared 11 rebounds, and Derek Hughes led with 13 assists added to his seven points.
“The last few games, Josh hasn’t scored a lot, but he hasn’t had a high number of shot attempts either,” Abbott said. “Josh is a good enough student of the game to know that with the players we have, he doesn’t have to force shots. Some nights it someone else’s turn, and sometimes it is his turn. Tonight, it was definitely his turn.”
If Maine-Endwell happens to lose to Oneonta this Wednesday, Norwich will be idle until a Feb. 17 date at Elmira Southside in the STAC playoffs.

Norwich 33, Owego 30
NORWICH – Norwich did some damage control Saturday afternoon on senior recognition day, and came out of a four-game swoon to avenge a loss to Owego.
Senior Elisha Eddy made a story-book return to the lineup after missing her team’s first 14 games recovering from an illness. Eddy scored just four points, but she canned two free throws – the tying and go-ahead points – with 12.7 seconds left to give Norwich a 31-30 lead. Owego’s Lexi Hilliker missed an inside shot on the next possession giving the ball back to the Tornado. Bryn Loomis tacked on two more free throws with 4.1 seconds left – her only points of the game. “How fitting, after all she has been through – and on senior night – Elisha makes the free throws for the win,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett.
Norwich trailed nearly the entire second half taking the lead, 25-24, late in the third quarter on two Hailey Dietrich free throws.
Molly DeMellier kept Norwich in striking range hitting two second-half three balls, the first put Norwich up 28-27 early in the fourth. Nine turnovers in the final quarter conspired against the Tornado offense, although the defense did its part forcing Owego to rush shots late in 30-second clock possessions.
Owego’s lone basket of the fourth quarter came on Hilliker’s inside move in the low post, and teammate Sam Watson gave the Indians a 30-29 lead making one of two free throws.
DeMellier scored 12 points – all on three balls – to pace the Tornado (7-8), who dropped a 48-42 decision to Owego this past Monday. In that game, Brittany Rando scored 22 and Hilliker 13. In the NHS win, Hilliker scored seven, while Rando netted just two points. “I was really proud of our defensive effort,” Bennett said. “Offensively, we need to do a better job of not being so careless with the ball. Even though the scoreboard doesn’t show it, I think we are getting better on that end every time out.”
NHS seniors honored before the game were Eddy, Gabby Testani, Sarah Bonnell, and Tatyana Ithier.

G-MU 50, Franklin 46
COPES CORNERS – G-MU stopped a four-game skid, and stayed on pace to capture the Tri-Valley League division one title.
Tanya Barnes hit two free throws in the last minute, and Brianne Lambert added a single free throw for good measure to cap the win.
“We had solid balance in this game,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “We didn’t get a lot of points from Calli (Hill), Kirsten (Gonzalez), and Alexis (Lanza), but we got the ball to them in the right spots to shoot it, and they knocked down shots to keep (Franklin) honest.”
Barnes, who was blanketed with a box-and-one defense by Franklin much of the game, still came through with a team-high 18 points, and Lambert was next with 15.
Franklin’s Jordan Beers (20) and Jessica Terrano (18) provided the lion’s share of the Devils’ points in the loss.
G-MU (6-4, 8-7) needs to win out in division play against Morris and Laurens next week to clinch their part of the T-V title. “I thought it was pretty even on our side of the league, and if things went our way, we had a chance to win a division title,” Johnson said. “For the most part, they have, and it’s nice to control your own destiny.”

S-E 56, Sauquoit Valley 30
SHERBURNE – On senior recognition night Friday, S-E bounced back from its first league loss as everyone on the roster scored, and the Marauders clinched at least a share of the Center State Conference Division II title.
The Marauders had no one score more than 10 points. Leading the way was senior Kristi Irwin, who had an even 10, and junior Bridget Irwin, who also bucketed 10 points.
“We started all five seniors, and for everyone on the team to score, it was nice for them,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan.
The Marauders’ defense also did its part holding SV’s leading scorer, Megan Gaffney, to just five points. “We did a lot of good things tonight,” Mulligan said summing up her team’s performance. “We played really good defense, and on offense we worked the ball inside more, and we made our free throws.”
S-E (8-1, 14-3) play at second-place Canastota on Tuesday. The Marauders handed the Raiders one of their two league losses this season winning 43-34 on Jan. 20.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Richfield Springs, who beat Otselic Valley by five points earlier this season, scored just a single basket in the last quarter, and escaped with a one-point victory over the Vikings Friday night.
Shannon Mondor’s only basket of the game gave Richfield Springs the lift it needed to get by the Vikes. “We played so hard and couldn’t ask for more effort,” said OV coach Danielle Graham. “We just could not hit a shot from the field – or a foul shot.”
OV was just 13-for-35 from the foul line – 4-for-10 in the last quarter. It did show a new level of scrappiness forcing 35 jump balls in the contest.
Taylor Monroe, the lone senior on OV, was recognized with her parents before the game. Monroe led the Vikings with 11 points.

BAINBRIDGE – Shania Vandermark keyed a late-game surge for B-G, who pulled away to beat Sidney on Saturday.
Vandermark scored all eight of her points in the last quarter, and all of them came over the last three minutes. Vandermark had a steal and a layup to make it 35-29 as B-G finished the game on a 10-4 run.
Randi Conway and Chelsi Rosa had 13 points apiece for the Bobcats (5-3, 11-5), and Corinne Riegel came through with a strong defensive effort on Sidney’s Kate Philpott. Philpott had seven points in the first part of the opening quarter, but only three the rest of the way after a defensive switch that gave Riegel the defensive responsibilities on Philpott. “(Riegel) is a good on-the-ball defender, she’s quick, and really works hard on defense all of the time,” said B-G coach Bob Conway.

B-G 43, Sidney 33
Sidney was without leading scorer Dani Gravel, who missed the contest due to injury.
