Teen walks away from serious accident
NORWICH – A teen driver lost control of his parents’ car Thursday while going around a sharp turn, causing the vehicle he was driving to become airborne as it tumbled down an embankment.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies at the scene said the 16-year-old youth was not injured in the one car wreck and that he was wearing his seat belt.
The youth was heading north on Manley Road in the Town of Norwich toward County Rt. 10 A.
Deputies said the boy first veered to the right side of the roadway as he fought to control the Chrysler Pacifica. As the vehicle fishtailed, it struck a mail box before the driver turned hard left and sent it over the opposite side of the roadway. The Chrysler then hit a culvert that lifted and spun it into the air as it smashed through a pasture gate, clearing some of the field’s two-foot high fence posts at one point. The vehicle came to a rest in about a foot of snow in the open field about 100 feet from where it left the road and facing the opposite direction it was originally heading.
Emergency crews at the scene said it appeared the vehicle had overturned “several times” judging from the damage to its roof. They also said the vehicle was “totaled” and it had to be taken from the scene on a flatbed tow truck.
The pasture’s owners were home at the time and offered aid to the boy, who climbed out of the vehicle following the collision.
No tickets have yet been issued. Deputies said alcohol was not a factor.
