American Legion to host fundraiser for wounded soldier
SIDNEY – A fundraiser to assist an injured soldier, and Afton graduate, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sidney American Legion.
Spc. Matthew Cooke, a victim of the Nov. 5 Fort Hood, Texas shooting, is currently undergoing a long rehabilitation due to injuries he sustained when Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire in a processing center, killing 13 people and wounding 30, according to Legion member Larry Halbert.
Halbert reported that during the shooting, Cooke crawled to another wounded soldier and covered his body, saving his life.
“This benefit is a tribute to what he’s done and what he did,” said Halbert. “He truly is a hero.”
Cooke, a native of Afton, has served two tours of duty in Iraq, and wishes to re-enlist, stated Halbert, who added that the future is uncertain at this point.
A roast beef dinner, with mashed potatoes, vegetables and dessert will be offered for $9, and the fundraiser will feature entertainment, a bake sale, 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction. Binghamton radio station WAAL will also be on hand, broadcasting live, and Halbert said a web-camera will be streaming live images between the Legion and Cooke’s residence.
“This is really lifting his spirits, that we’re doing this,” said Halbert. “This is what the American Legion is all about; it’s what we do.”
