Renovations begin at East Main Street location
NORWICH – Renovations have begun on a dilapidated downtown property, made possible through a third round of Restore New York grant money.
The 24 East Main St. location, long considered an eyesore by city officials and formerly the home of Frames Unlimited, will benefit from $200,000 in Restore New York funds, in addition to approximately $30,000 contributed by the city.
“We’re in the process of gutting the entire structure in preparation for new wiring, plumbing and insulation,” said Mayor Joe Maiurano, who added that the preliminary renovations “should be finished by the end of the week.”
Bouckville-based contractor D. Hillman and Son successfully bid on the clean-up in mid-February, and have been making good progress since beginning last week, according to Code Enforcement Officer Jason Lawrence.
While Maiurano admitted that the structure is “going to look a little ugly for awhile,” he remarked that “it’s got to look ugly before it can look any better.”
Despite the unsavory appearance of the downtown location, city officials will continue their search for a potential buyer through March 15. The mayor added that an extension of that time-frame may be in order if a buyer has not been found by that deadline.
“Restore New York has just been a great program for the city and it’s served us well,” said Maiurano, referring to the three residential homes already completed thanks to the state grant. “We managed to clean up some properties that really needed it.”
Restore New York provides successful applicants with financial assistance for the revitalization of commercial and residential properties, and encourages community development and neighborhood growth through the elimination and redevelopment of blighted structures, according to www.empire.state.ny.us.
