Greene nipped by Tioga in Class C playoffs
Girls’ Basketball
Tioga 31, Greene 29
TIOGA – Greene played well enough to win but struggled mightily with its shooting in a Class C sectional playoff loss to top-seeded Tioga Wednesday night.
Greene finished 2-for-18 from the field in the third quarter alone, and on its next-to-last possession of the game, had four shot attempts that were off the mark. “We outplayed them in so many areas, we just didn’t finish,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton, who said his team shot just 22 percent overall for the game.
Tioga’s Casey Hoyt hit a three-pointer with about a minute to play lifting her club to a 31-27 advantage. Greene senior Liz Wentlent shaved the deficit in half with a basket, and Greene forced Tioga turnovers on the next two possessions. “It was so exciting to see how hard we competed tonight,” Gorton said. “It just wasn’t meant to be.”
The Trojans (15-6) held Tioga 25 points below its season scoring average, and the Tigers’ leading scorer, Kara McDuffee was limited to nine. Hoyt, however, loomed large offensively in the opening quarter scoring 10 of her team’s 12 points. Hoyt didn’t score again until her late three-pointer.
Erin Smith scored 10 points to lead Greene, and Wentlent finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. “It was disappointing to not pull it off, but I was proud of the way we battled,” Gorton said.
