March 16 election sees races for village mayor, trustees

SHERBURNE – Village of Sherburne voters will have a choice between candidates for mayor and for trustee seats when they go to the polls March 16.
Sherburne Village Fire Chief Pat Lawrence is challenging two-term incumbent Mayor William Acee for his position. Lawrence, who is general manager at Lok N Logs, Inc. and worked for Webb and Sons previously, said he made the decision to run last month.
“I believe the village is entitled to open and honest government and there’s time for a change,” he said this morning.
Acee was first elected Mayor in a race in 2001 where the village experienced an usually high turn out. He received 193 votes in a turn out of 380 voters and 20 absentee ballots. Acee ran unopposed in 2006 for the four-year position. (1,455 pop.)
“My focus is economic development and keeping Sherburne, financially, in good order. My priorities are keeping the tax rate low and the cost of services low so that people can remain in their homes,” he said.
Also running for election are three candidates for two trustee positions. Christopher Tomaselli and Robert J. Smith vie to retain their seats on the council for another four year term, but they are being challenged by newcomer Elena Casscles.
James Peptis is running unopposed on the ballot to fill the unexpired two-year term of former Village Justice Frank Faulkner, who retired.
