St. Baldrick’s returns this weekend

NORWICH – Local residents may notice an increase in shaved heads throughout the city, as the St. Baldrick’s Foundation returns this weekend for the sixth straight year, raising money and awareness for childhood cancer research.
The foundation, established in 2000 by a small group of reinsurance executives, utilizes its donations to fund more in its field than any other organization in the country, with the exception of the United States government, according to www.stbaldricks.org.
With over $74 million raised in the past decade, the foundation challenges participants to collect monetary donations from friends, family and the community, in return for shaving their heads and becoming, according to its website, “walking billboards for childhood cancer awareness.”
“We have over 40 people taking part at this point, including several women and children,” said Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo, who is organizing the local event. “This is just one of those things that has taken on a life of its own through the years, and the community has been behind us from the start.”
Chawgo reported that, for the first time ever, the annual event has exceeded its original $10,000 goal, and has garnered over $11,000 in online donations to date. Locally, the event has raised over $100,000 since it began.
“This event is so important to the community, as everybody knows someone who’s had to deal with cancer,” stated Chawgo, who added that he considered helping out at the childhood level a “great cause.”
City resident Michael Smith, a St. Baldrick’s participant since its first year, said he considered the opportunity to take part in the event an honor, and because the cause “ is very personal to me.”
“It’s something I truly believe in and support,” said Smith. “It’s such a small sacrifice and it’s an important endeavor. Every single child we can help is a blessing.”
The event, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Howard Johnson’s, will feature door prizes, raffles and live entertainment by local musician Zach Miner and Ithaca-based musical act K.T. and the Mad Dogs.
“We’d like to thank all the people throughout Central New York that have donated and decided to take part,” said Chawgo. “We’ve been extremely successful since day one six years ago, and we’ve always exceeded our goal. It’s a testament to the character of our community and we couldn’t do any of this without their support.”
