Pennysaver/Manpower win first-ever CBL title
NORWICH – Norwich Pennysaver/Manpower Inc., just a .500 team during the regular season, came from the fifth-seeded spot to win the Norwich YMCA Men’s Corporate Basketball League title on Wednesday night.
Locked in a tight game at halftime, Pennysaver/Manpower went on a 19-6 run midway through the second half to build its lead to 15 points, and carried that salvo to a 65-56 victory over Haddad Construction.
Mike Genute scored 20 points for the victorious team including 8-for-9 from the foul line in the second half. Brandon Foulds, who is one of two original team members left from the club’s first squad five years ago, added 14 markers to the win.
“We’ve been fighting year after year, and we added a couple pieces to the team, and it paid off,” Foulds said. “We played better and better together, and became a really good team by the end of the year.”
In the first two meetings this season, Pennysaver/Manpower eked out a one-point win in December, but it was Haddad who rolled to a 29-point victory just over five weeks ago.
Haddad jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 90 seconds, a start reminiscent of the blowout win in February. Foulds and Genute had eight points apiece in the first half to combat the 12-point first half of Haddad’s Will Joslyn.
Genute banged in a deep three-pointer with 1:37 left in the first half giving his team a 26-25 lead, and Daryl Decker tacked on a free throw for the Pennysaver/Manpower, who kept the advantage throughout the second half.
Key to the second half surge was Pennysaver/Manpower’s full-court press that created numerous turnovers. Mike Baldwin banked in a three-pointer from the top of the key to start the big second-half run, Foulds, and Matt Beadle each canned treys off turnovers, and Dan Ohl had a put-back basket to help move the lead to 56-41 with just under eight minutes to play.
Haddad’s John Haddad drew his team as close as six points, 58-52, after an inside bucket with 1:35 to play. Decker immediately answered that basket with two free throws to settle his team down.
“We were able to put enough points on the board and made some good plays at the right time,” Genute said, who previously won a league championship several years ago as a member of Mang Insurance.
Pennysaver/Manpower’s championship run included victories over the numbers one, two, and three seeds in the seven-team tournament.
Joslyn paced Haddad with 17 points and Matt Osborne hit four three balls on his way to a 14-point game.
Notes: Haddad Construction’s Jaret Paul had a rim-rattling dunk in the second half. Paul took a bounce pass from Joslyn, and powered through unfettered for a two-handed stuff that pulled his team within 35-32. Genute would answer for Pennysaver/Manpower with a driving basket on the next possession to quell any potential momentum.
