S-E teachers present literacy bag project in Albany
ALBANY – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) met on March 15 with teachers from Sherburne-Earlville Central School attending the Rural Education Advisory Committee (REAC) Innovative Programs in Rural Schools showcase in Albany.
“The Sherburne-Earlville Community/School Connections for Literacy Success project is a wonderful example of the creative, early education programs taking place in our rural schools,” said Senator Seward. “The program has helped jump start the educational experience for our youngest students preparing them for an exciting new chapter in their lives.”
The project serves as an outreach to the families of preschoolers to create a positive home/school relationship. Special “literacy bags” containing books, puzzles, puppets and school supplies were handed out to families of Pre-K and kindergarten students. The bags are designed to help children begin the process of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
“Inventive programs like the Sherburne-Earlville “literacy bags” help bring local schools and the community together to work toward a common goal: educating our young people. It is important that we continue to nurture programs like this that develop early literacy skills along with a positive home learning environment,” Seward concluded.
The mission of the REAC is to advance rural education, quality access and cost effectiveness. The committee is engaged in several activities including: mini-grant demonstration projects, sponsored research on educational needs in rural areas, and the promotion of interagency cooperation.
