Calling all Dr. Seuss fans: Afton middle schoolers present Seussical, Jr.
AFTON – The Afton Central School’s Intermediate Choir will present Seussical the Musical, Jr. tonight.
According to Choral Director Michal Westover, the show is the junior version of the Broadway musical based on the collected works of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to generations of American children as Dr. Seuss.
“I think one of the draws is the music is fun,” said Westover, who explained that the selected the show. “There’s a lot of silliness involved.”
The 34 member cast is comprised both of middle school choir members and a contingent of 5th and 6th graders, who play the citizens of Whoville. The show’s young stars have been rehearsing since January, memorizing lines, learning songs and practicing dance sequences for each of the many musical numbers.
Audience goers will recognize many of their favorite Dr. Seuss characters in the show, including the Cat in the Hat (Shawna Stevens), Horton the Elephant (Leslie Tallmadge), Mayzie (Emanuelle Sera), The Grinch (Payton Cutting) and Yertle the Turtle (Tessa Cutting). They will also be introduced to JoJo (Christiana Raymond), the offspring of the Mayor of Whoville and his wife, who plays a pivotal role in how the show unfolds.
Working behind the scene, according to Westover, are members of the high school choir. These upperclass students lend a hand, not only with hair and makeup, but also with lighting, sound and helping backstage.
Parents have pitched in as well, the choir director said, both with creating the set and sewing costumes. The school’s home and career students have also helped in this regard, according to Westover.
Those wishing to see the Afton Intermediate School Choir’s production of Seussical the Musical, Jr. will only have one opportunity to do so. The show’s sole performance will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30 in the school auditorium. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 for adults and $4 for students and seniors.
