GREENE – Greene edged past Oxford scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth in Thursday afternoon’s opening-game victory.
Brendan Kinne led off the sixth with a triple, and scored when Alex Kenyon reached on an error. Jeff Carlin’s RBI single scored Kenyon with the winner.
“The first time out, we played really well, and our pitching was great,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton.
Nic Puglisi pitched four innings for Greene and struck out eight, and Matt Jones came on for the three scoreless innings striking out four for his first varsity win. Jones allowed Oxford to load the bases in the fifth with no outs, but struck out the next two batters and induced a ground out to end the threat.
Carlin went 2-for-4 and Nate Patrick had two hits and one ribbie for Greene.

NEW BERLIN – Ryan Dalpiaz had four of Harpursville’s eight hits, and finished with two runs scored and an RBI in the Hornets’ win at UV Thursday.
The Storm bolstered Harpursville’s offense issuing eight walks and committing five errors. “We started to walk guys later in the game, and combined with our errors, we just didn’t help ourselves out,” said UV coach Tom Locke.
Brett Smith went 3-for-4 on the UV side with an RBI.
Wednesday, Hancock’s Cody Wellman hit a walk-off solo homer to start the bottom of the seventh giving his club a hard-earned 9-8 victory over the Storm.

AFTON – Playing on Afton’s field due to unplayable conditions on own home diamond, Sidney adapted quickly as the “home” team on the Knights’ field, and won going away in its season opener Thursday.
Tanner Westcott had a go-ahead two-run single in the fourth for Sidney, and Westcott singled in two more runs during a five-run sixth to polish off a 3-for-3 day.
Kevin Davie struck out eight and allowed one run in five innings for the win, and Andy Kozak had four strikeouts in two innings of scoreless relief. “For our first time on an actual baseball field this season, I was pretty happy,” said Sidney coach Kyle Vibbard. “We hit the ball hard at times, and play good defense. This early in the year, we’re just happy to be outside.”
Adam Rupakus allowed two runs in five innings for Afton to take the loss.

MORRIS – Morris rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Vikings in Thursday’s non-league matchup.
OV’s Trevor Marston and Chase Marston had two hits and two RBI apiece.
Justin Utter and Joe Utter added two hits and two ribbies apiece in a winning effort.
Combined, the two teams made 20 errors.
“It was a beautiful day to play, but neither team put together a very good game in the field,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “Both teams hit the ball okay and pitched okay, it’s just both teams struggled defensively.”
OV plays at Madison on Monday.

GREENE – Rebecca Hanrahan struck out 16 Oxford batters, and threw an opening-game no-hitter as the Trojans blanked the Blackhawks on Thursday afternoon.
Hanrahan walked two batters, and Oxford managed two early baserunners after Greene errors. Other than that, the Blackhawks were contained throughout. “We have a lot of new players at critical positions, and they made some good plays today,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “If we continue to make good plays on defense, like we did tonight, we should be solid.”
Oxford pitcher, Jackie Heggie, was nearly as formidable as Hanrahan allowing just a single run in the fourth inning. Brittany Youngs walked, and later scored on Louise Holcomb’s RBI double.
Heggie finished with seven strikeouts, one walk, and she scattered five Greene hits.

Thursday Harpursville’s Stephanie Gaska allowed just one UV run to earn the victory. Kayleigh Livermore and Erin Andrews had two hits apiece for the Hornets, who benefited on offense from seven base on balls and five hit batters.
Morgan Sohne had three of UV’s six hits.
Wednesday night, Andrea Marino doubled and homered for Hancock driving in five runs in a 9-2 victory.

Jessie Winans and Stephanie Parsons each had three hits and three RBIs as host Afton earned a Midstate Athletic Conference non-division rout in five innings.
