NORWICH – The New York State Justice Court Assistance Program has granted approximately $40,000 to Chenango County courts, according to figures released this week by Supervising Justice W. Howard Sullivan.

The program provides millions of dollars each year to the state’s nearly 1,300 justice courts. Sullivan, Chenango’s county, family and surrogate court judge, supervises judges for all 59 town and village courts in the counties of Chenango, Broome and Cortland, and serves as the liaison between the village and town courts and the state’s unified court system.

“This is the third year of the program which has been very beneficial to the local courts,” said Sullivan. “Before the state’s Justice Court Assistance Program began dispensing money, local courts often had only local taxpayers to defray the expenses. There was recognition by the state that assistance was needed and that lent to this program.”
