Windsor rallies to beat Norwich

Evening Sun Report

Baseball

Windsor 9, Norwich 6
NORWICH – Norwich was unable to protect its early advantage, and two errors in the sixth inning helped Windsor take the lead for good in Wednesday’s game for the Purple Tornado.
“We did a lot of good things, but the first time out, the tale of the tape was that we made three errors, and they made none,” said Norwich coach John Martinson.
With Norwich clinging to a one-run lead entering the sixth, Brandon Kimble had a one-out double to start the inning. After a walk and a throwing error scored the first run, David Goetz’s two-run single tied the game. Goetz would eventually come around to score on another fielding error.
Norwich put all of its offense together in the first two innings with back-to-back three-run frames. Mackay Hotaling finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and a triple. Christian Hotaling added two hits and one RBI.

McGraw 9, Otselic Valley 3
SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley made a much better showing, said head coach Dave Loomis, but was facing much better opposition as the Vikes fell to 0-3 on the season.
“We played better in the field and made better decisions,” Loomis said. “It was a pretty good game. After the first inning, they hit the ball quite well.”
Austin Chambers had a two-run triple for McGraw, and Chris Torress along with Aaron Hitt finished with 2-for-3 days at the plate.

Greene 18, Harpursville 13
HARPURSVILLE – Greene’s offense posted a season-high total for runs, and the Trojans needed most of those tallies winning a slugfest over Harpursville Wednesday.
Down 2-1, Greene scored seven runs in the second, starting the rally with two outs and no runners on base. “We had a lot of clutch hits, and a lot of our runs scored today were with two outs,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton, whose club improved to 3-1 overall.
Gorton pointed to Jeff Carlin’s three innings of relief as a settling influence on his team. With Carlin on the hill, the Greene batsmen chalked up 10 more runs to move the lead to nine runs at one point. Nic Puglisi was a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, Nate Patrick went 3-for-5, and Curtis Richards along with Carlin had two hits apiece and six combined runs scored Carlin also earned the victory.
“Carlin came in when we were struggling and in a hole, and he pitched great,” Gorton said.

Unadilla Valley 9, Afton 5
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley earned its first win of the season rallying from a 4-0 deficit in the opening inning to defeat the Crimson Knights.
Number nine hitter, John Lopez, sparked the UV lineup finishing 3-for-3. Lopez led off the third and fourth innings with singles, and the Storm grabbed the lead in the fourth, 5-4.
“The wind was blowing pretty bad, and we had a couple misreads in the outfield in the first inning,” said UV coach Tom Locke. “After that, Travis (Conklin) settled down. When he kept the ball down, he was successful.”
Zach Montgomery added two hits and two RBI, a Conklin struck out 10 and walked two.
Adam Rupakus tripled for the Knights.

Windsor 12, Norwich 0
NORWICH – Windsor jumped on Norwich early with eight of its runs in the first two innings, and pitcher Makenzie Mullins struck out 10 in a one-hit shutout victory.
Becca Griswold went 3-for-5 with five RBI to lead the Black Knights. Griswold hit a three-run homer to highlight a five-run second, and she added a two-run triple in the seventh.
Norwich pitcher Jaime Berger, pitching her first varsity game, settled down after a shaky start giving up just three runs over the final four innings. “We had a couple of starters out, and I was inspired by the way we hung in there today,” said Norwich coach Dennis Eaton. “We needed to be on our game at the start, and today was a good lesson. After the bad start, we showed that we can compete.”
Ashley Thomas had Norwich’s lone basehit against Mullins. The Tornado play at Seton Catholic Central on Friday.

Greene 8, Harpursville 1
HARPURSVILLE – Greene remained unbeaten on the season, and won its third game in as many days beating Harpursville on the road Wednesday.
Harpursville, who beat Greene early last season, never led in this contest. “This is very exciting for us because we struggled with our bats early last season,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We’re already putting the hits together, and we were able to do it today against a good pitcher.”
Harpursville pitcher, Stephanie Gaska, shut down the Trojans a year ago in an early-season Hornets victory. This time out, Greene scored at least one run over the last four innings, and tacked on four insurance runs in the seventh.
Winning pitcher Rebecca Hanrahan went 2-for-2 with two RBI, three runs scored, and a solo home run. Brittany Youngs had one RBI and finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
“The last couple of games, the other team has made a lot of contact, and we’re making the plays in the field,” Smith said. “It is good to be tested early like that.”

Sidney 3, Oxford 2
OXFORD – Sidney stunted Oxford’s two-game winning streak this week scoring the winning run in the top of the seventh.
Chyna Simonds drew a one-out walk, and stole second to move into scoring position. Pinch-hitter Briana Switkowski doubled to score Simonds with the winner.
“We just didn’t get our bats going today,” said Oxford coach Margo Barrows. “We weren’t hitting the outside pitch, and that’s where (Dani Gravel) was putting it.”
Gravel registered a no-hitter, although an error, a dropped third strike, and two passed balls in the sixth inning led to a pair of Oxford runs tying the game at two apiece.
