NORWICH – Norwich gave up an early lead in its last game, and Wednesday, the Tornado rallied from an early deficit to earn their first win of the season.

Josh Borfitz, Mackay Hotaling, and Whaley had single ribbies in the fifth to score Kyle Cashman, Lucas Follett, and Paddy Law respectively. In the sixth, Nick McCullough singled, stole second, moved to third on a flyout by Casey Edwards, and scored on Follett’s RBI triple.
McCullough went 2-for-3, and Follett also had two hits for the Tornado (1-2).
“We have to get rid of some of those errors, but it was really nice to see the bottom of our lineup come through at the plate tonight,” said Norwich coach John Martinson.

The Bobcats banged out 19 hits, and routed Hancock on Wednesday afternoon. Travis Colburn continued his hot hitting with a perfect 5-for-5 day with four runs scored and two RBI. Winning pitcher Cody Lake was 4-for-5 with three ribbies. “This is the team I’ve been waiting to see all season long,” said B-G coach Pete Mansheffer. “The hitting was infectious, and it went up and down the lineup.”
Paul Parsons added three hits, four RBI, and three runs scored for the Bobcats (1-7), and Lake allowed five hits and just a single run in the sixth inning. “This is the type of game you would like to bottle up and bring to the field every time,” Mansheffer said. “We played such good baseball tonight, and it was nice to see.”

SIDNEY – Sidney’s offense capitalized on early UV mistakes, and put a dozen runs on the board over the first three innings to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Dylan Umbra had a two-run single in the opening inning, and Ryan Robertson added an RBI fielder’s choice as the lead stood at 4-0 after one.
UV pared that in half before the Warriors’ batsmen piled on the runs with two in the bottom of the second and six more in the third.
Two errors compounded UV’s woes in the third, and RBI hits followed from John Wingate, Trevor Macpherson, Andy Kozak, and Umbra.
“Other than that third inning, UV played a pretty clean game,” said Sidney coach Kyle Vibbard. “UV played some great baseball the last three innings, we were just able to take advantage of their mistakes. UV has come a long way, and Tom (Locke, UV coach) is doing a nice job with the program.”

GREENE – Unatego scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to create some breathing room in Thursday’s win over Greene.
An error combined with walks led to the four-run uprising for the Spartans. “We had two tough innings in this game that we could have easily gotten out of without giving up a run,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “When you make mistakes against good teams, they make you pay.”
Greene had a solo homer from Nic Puglisi in the sixth, and Brian Day doubled in the same inning eventually scoring on an error. Jeff Carlin had two hits in four trips to the plate, the only multi-hit player for the Trojans.
Dale Rifenbark finished with 15 strikeouts in a route-going effort to get the win. “He threw a ton of pitches tonight, and I thought our approach at the plate was terrible,” Gorton said. “We took pitches early in the count that were hittable, and that put us in a hole. NORWICH – Against perennial STAC power Susquehanna Valley, Norwich showed its continued improvement with season-highs in runs and hits in a close loss to the Sabers Wednesday.
“Sus Valley is a team that regularly goes deep in the state tournament,” said Norwich coach Dennis Eaton. “The thing I am most proud of is that in the bottom of seventh, we were down 8-3. We scored three runs, and were one hit away from tying the game. We showed a lot of grit.”
Shelby Condon had three hits and three two RBI for the Tornado, Jamie Berger had two hits and a single ribbie, and Skye Ingraham had two hits and one run batted in. The Tornado’s 11 total hits exceeded the previous three-game total.
“We’re getting closer, and even though we haven’t notched a win, we’re learning how to act and react in close-game situations,” Eaton said.
Ashley Campbell had 13 strikeouts and just one walk for NHS in her first-ever varsity start.

Jordan Anderson went 2-for-3 with two runs for UV, and Carly Beadle also had a 2-for-3 day at the plate. “We’re making better contact, we just need to get the fielding to come around,” Backus said.

HARPURSVILLE – Oxford overcame six errors, and a 23-strikeout performance by Harpursville’s Stephanie Gaska to win in 11 innings Wednesday.
After the ninth inning, the last out of the previous inning is immediately moved to second base to start the frame. In the 11th, Julie Heggie’s bunt single drew a poor throw allowing Lacey Barry to come around from second to score. Heggie went to third on the play, and scored on Alyshia Crawford’s sacrifice fly.
Oxford made up a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the sixth. Barry tripled in one run, and Barry scored on a throwing error at third base closing the gap to one. Heggie singled, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a Crawford groundout to tie the game.
“Our girls never gave up, kept working, and persevered,” said Oxford coach Margo Barrows. “Errors hurt us in the beginning of the game, but we made plays late in the game when we needed them.”
Crawford finished with two RBI, and Heggie had two hits. Jackie Heggie struck out 11 for the win.

If not for a catcher’s interference call in the fourth inning, Hanrahan, who fanned 10 and walked none, would have had a perfect game. “I think (other teams) make the mistake of not being careful when Rebecca is hitting,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “She’s patient at the plate, and if you make a mistake, she makes you pay.”
