Marauders come up one run shy

Mt. Markham 6, S-E 5
WEST WINFIELD – Sherburne-Earlville scored two runs in the seventh to force extra innings, but came up on the short side in an eight-inning loss to Mount Markham Thursday.
S-E rallied in the seventh as Mike Wilson and Cory Musician reached base safely. Mike Squires’ RBI groundout cut the margin to 5-4, and Musician came around to score on a dropped third strike.
In the eighth, S-E recorded just one out before a Mustangs single to right field with two runners in scoring position ended the game.
“There was a slight glimmer of S-E baseball for about three or four innings where we played really well,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “We just had three or four costly mistakes.”
Matt Piazzi had two hits – both doubles – and one RBI for S-E, and Musician scored two runs.

Deposit 6, Oxford 4
DEPOSIT – The margin of error was slim for Oxford on Thursday, who fell in a road game with Deposit on Thursday.
Deposit broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. One of Oxford’s two errors in the game followed up a walk, and Evan Thomas’ single scored the go-ahead run. Tanner Sexton followed that with a two-run single.
“We played fairly well, we just had one too many errors and one too many walks,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “These things were just untimely, and just enough to make you lose a 6-4 game.”
Krys Escobar had a two-run single in the second for Oxford, and Andrew Pier’s follow-up RBI single gave the Blackhawks a one-run lead early on.

Chenango Valley 6, Norwich 2
CHENANGO BRIDGE – Chenango Valley jumped on Norwich starter Mackay Hotaling for three runs in the opening inning, and the Tornado (1-3) never recovered in Thursday’s game.
Cameron Moochler capped the early uprising for the Warriors with a two-run triple. Later on, Donnie Fry added an RBI double.
Ricky Ruffo pitched five innings for CV striking out 10 to earn the victory. “We really struggled putting the ball in play,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “They got on us early, and Ruffo did a nice job on the mound.”
Lucas Follett and Richie Bonney had single ribbies for the Tornado, who host Owego on Monday.

Deposit 5, Oxford 2
DEPOSIT – Oxford lost for just the third time this season spotting Deposit a 4-0 lead after one inning and a five-run disadvantage after two.
Deposit drew five base on balls in the opening inning to help produce the early offense. Danielle Raymond paced the Lumberjacks with two hits.
Lacey Barry went 2-for-3 to lead Oxford. Jackie Heggie had six strikeouts in six innings of relief for the Blackhawks.

G-MU 7, Franklin 6
COPES CORNERS – G-MU scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for its second straight win this week.
Samantha Delaney had two hits and two RBI for the Raiders, and pitcher Courtney Hilman struck out nine for the win. A box score was not available at press time.

Mount Markham 15, S-E 2
WEST WINFIELD – Mount Markham homered three times against the Marauders to earn a Center State Conference victory Tuesday.
Tori Roberts hit a pair of roundtrippers smacking a two-run shot in the second and a solo homer in the third. Jamie Lincourt highlighed a five-run fourth for the Mustangs with a three-run home run.
S-E hurt its own cause making 10 errors in conjuction with MM’s 12 basehits. “We weren’t making the routine plays that we normally make, and we just fell apart,” said S-E coach Michelle Parker.
Cori Bergeron and Sam Hill had hits for S-E (0-3).

Boys’ Tennis

Seton Catholic Central 6, Greene 1
GREENE – Greene eighth-graders Cameron Race and Kevin Koerts paired up for the lone Trojans win in Thursday’s non-league matchup against Seton Catholic Central.
Race and Koerts won in three sets over Alex Terela and Alphonso Rivera, 6-4, 0-6, 10-5. It was the first varsity win for Koerts.
