Unemployment ticks slightly up in March after two months of lows

NORWICH – Chenango County’s unemployment statistics in March improved over the past two months when record highs were reported.

The county’s jobless rate was 9.9 percent in March, down from 10.5 in February and 10.4 in January, according to a report Thursday from the New York State Labor Department office in Binghamton. The previous record high, 10.3 percent, was set back in 1994.

Last month’s figure compares to 9.8 percent unemployment in March of 2009.

Chenango County’s unemployment rate last month exceeded that of the five neighboring counties: Delaware County came in at 9.3; Broome County hit 9.0; Otsego had 8.2; and Madison reported 8.7 percent.
