Hospice spring plant sale orders due soon

NORWICH – “All Seasons of life are important, some just require special attention.” That is an important philosophy of Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County. The saying ties in nicely with the agency’s four-season logo that pays homage to the climate we experience in our region of the country. It also represents the fact that Hospice patients are enrolled in the program in any and all seasons of their life. Hospice has given care to infants and centenarians, and persons of every age in between.
Spring is an important season for Hospice because the annual plant sale takes place each May. The fundraiser has become the agency’s biggest, and it takes an army of volunteers to complete all tasks associated with the sale.
Residents in all corners of Chenango County will find a plant sale order form in their mailbox at home or in their workplace in a few short weeks.
Donna Wood-Craig, Hospice’s Development and Community Relations Coordinator says that the Spring Plant Sale raises money that helps fill the considerable gap between the actual cost of patient care and the amount of reimbursement received from Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers. “These funds pay for nursing care, social work visits, and bereavement support,” says Wood-Craig. “Monies raised are used to purchase medications that treat symptoms and bring pain relief to our patients, as well as provide medical equipment in the home.”
Individuals who buy their flowers from Hospice need to know that their purchase will make a difference in the lives of Hospice patients in their communities. “Our plants our beautiful and we try to keep the prices reasonable, on par with high end florists,” says Wood-Craig. “We understand that someone may find a lower price at a large retail store, but offer a high quality product with the added satisfaction of donating to a worthy cause.”
Individual customers must have their orders in by Friday, April 23, while school and company customers should work with their in-house coordinator.
Hospice has positive relationships with more than 50 schools and businesses that run internal plant sales. Employees enjoy the convenience of selecting their plants, paying for them, and taking delivery of their order at their place of work. Other customers can pickup their plants in their town or one close to them. Hospice uses NBT Bank branches in Afton, Bainbridge, Greene, New Berlin, Oxford and Sherburne as central pickup points. Norwich customers claim their order at Weiler Park. This year the plants will arrive on Wednesday, May 12.
If you’re the type of person who likes to see and touch before you buy Hospice has something for you too. They plan a cash and carry sale on Wednesday, May 19 in East Side Park in Downtown Norwich from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. rain or shine. Wood-Craig says that pre-orders account for about 90 percent of the sales, while the remaining 10 percent is made at the cash and carry sale. “Although the park sale is much small it is important to accommodate every type of customer, and we like being seen in the park once a year,” says Wood-Craig. People may not stop and buy a plant, but they can’t miss our tent and our signs, so hopefully we’re getting our name out in the community in a colorful way.”
If you have never received an order form in your home mailbox, and would like to see what plants Hospice offers, you can call their office at 334-3556 and add your name to the mailing list. Customers can also order and pay for their plants online by going to the agency’s website at www.hospicechenango.org.
Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County is a non-profit health care agency that cares for patients who are approaching the end of their life. Care is appropriate for individuals who have many months left to live, and choose to live them feeling the best they can on their own terms. Although Hospice cares for a number of patients in nursing homes, adult homes, or hospital rooms, the majority remain at home throughout their illness. Hospice has a full time Registered Nurse who welcomes phone calls from families who wish to explore whether Hospice Care would be helpful in their care of a loved one. Informational visits can be arranged by calling the Hospice office Monday through Friday at 334-3556.
