Pennysaver/Evening Sun Tournament
NORWICH – Whitney Point scored four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead from Norwich, and improved to 8-0 on the season with a 7-2 victory over the Tornado in the 1st Annual Pennysaver/Evening Sun softball tournament Saturday afternoon.
Norwich took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on three straight hits. Molly Moore and Shelby Condon reached on crisp singles, and senior Ashley Thomas gapped a pitch to left center for a two-run double that put NHS in front 2-1.
Whitney Point turned that deficit around quickly. After the Eagles’ Casey Stahl reached on an error, Karli Theleman followed with a single and McKay Ross’ single to right field was misplayed allowed two runs to score for the lead. Winning pitcher Chelsea Ellerson padded the lead with an RBI single, and Norwich’s third error of the inning led to the final run.
“It’s been the same story all season where we lose focus for maybe one inning, we make mistakes, and the other team capitalizes,” said Norwich coach Dennis Eaton. “We seem to lose a little bit of confidence...today, we played six solid innings out of seven. We did give up a run here and there, we just need to limit our mistakes.”
Taylor Theleman added insurance in the sixth with an RBI triple.
Thomas had two hits for Norwich, who had eight hits in the contest, but failed to string much offense together outside of the fourth inning. “We were a little over-aggressive at the plate, and maybe tried to make things happen too quickly,” Eaton. “We were impatient, and that stung us.”
In the consolation game, G-MU scored a remarkable 19 runs in the bottom of the third, and improved to 6-2 on the season with a 23-2 win over Nightingale-Bamford.
Alicia Sebeck and Kat Card each went 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead the Raiders, Katie Bakhuizen went 4-for-4 with four runs scored. Courtney Hillman pitched three innings to pick up the victory.
In the opening games, Norwich defeated N-B, 21-0, and Whitney Point advanced with a 12-2 victory over the Raiders.
Norwich freshman, Ashley Campbell, struck out 10 and pitched a no-hitter in the five-inning contest. Thomas drove in a team-high four runs, Jamie Berger had two doubles and knocked in three runs, and Katrina McMinn chalked up three hits and scored four runs.
Taylor Theleman had three hits including a three-run triple as the Golden Eagles moved to a 10-0 lead after three innings. Karli Theleman had two hits, three runs scored, and one RBI.
Sebeck had a basehit and a run scored for G-MU, and Logan Eltz drove in Kat Card in the fourth.
