Scouts to honor Forsythe at annual dinner May 13
NORWICH – Daryl R. Forsythe has been selected to receive the 25th annual Chenango Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award. The Dinner in his honor will be held on May 13 at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich.
Forsythe was born in Oneonta, and has been a life-long resident of New York State. He is a 1965 graduate of Utica College of Syracuse University, with a degree in Industrial Management. In 1979, he earned an MBA in General Management from Syracuse University.
After a brief tenure with Revere Copper and Brass in Rome, Forsythe joined Bendix Corporation in Sidney, where he held several positions in management. In 1984, he accepted a position with Simmonds Precision (later BF Goodrich) in Norwich as vice president of operations. He was named Vice President and general manager for the BF Goodrich Engine Electrical Systems Division in 1987. Under his leadership, the division employed more than 900 people in four locations including two plants in Norwich and one each in California and New Jersey. In 1995, he became President & Chief Executive Officer of NBT Bancorp a financial services holding company headquartered in Norwich, New York. The company operates NBT Bank, N.A., which includes 87 NBT Bank offices in Upstate New York and Northern Vermont and 38 Pennstar Bank offices in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Forsythe is chairman of NBT Bancorp Inc. He has been affiliated with NBT since 1988 when he joined the NBT Bank Board of Directors. He has been a director for NBT Bancorp since 1992.
Daryl and his wife, Phyllis, live in Norwich.
Forsythe is active in a number of community organizations, serving on the Commerce Chenango and Development Chenango Boards and chairing the Chenango County Ethics Committee. In addition, he is an honorary trustee for the SUNY Oneonta Foundation and a trustee for Syracuse University. He also serves as a director for Security Mutual Insurance Company of New York, Inc., the New York Business Development Corp., New York Central Mutual Insurance Company and the National Security Life and Annuity Company.
Numerous acts of kindness and charity by Forsythe have purposely gone unreported but have helped make the greater Norwich area a better place to live. The Chenango District of the Baden-Powell Council, Boy Scouts of America is proud to award Daryl R. Forsythe with the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award.
“In honor of our 25th anniversary we will also be recognizing the founders of the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award, Edward S. Nelson and Dr. Richard Hosbach, with a special spotlight on the role of Edward S. Nelson the only founder who did not himself receive the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award,” said District Executive Chris Wilkinson.

The Baden-Powell Council, Boy Scouts of America served over 650 youth members in Chenango County in 2009. The Boy Scouts depend 100 percent on Community Support and do not receive any federal funding. The yearly cost to the council for each youth in the program is $169. Through this year’s event local Scout Leaders hope to raise 20 percent of the county’s budget from this dinner to support local Scouts.
