Cyclones receive scholar-athlete awards
NORWICH – Several Norwich Cyclone Pop Warner football players and cheerleaders were recently recognized as scholar-athletes by the National Pop Warner organization.
Cameron Edwards and Jordan Vinal were selected as sixth grade first team scholastic all-Americans for the Eastern Region, and second team National Pop Warner.
Additionally, the Cyclones were notified that four other Cyclones were awarded second team national all-American honors. Selected were Makenzie Maynard (fifth grade), Conner Eaton and Ashley Marvin (sixth grade), and Mathew Burke (eighth grade). Honorable mention scholar-athletes were Mathew Parella, Jake Walsh, Stephanie Mullins and Nathan Scheer. National all-American award winners are invited to attend the 50th annual Scholar American banquet at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia on May 28.
“This is a tremendous honor for our local Pop Warner organization, this community and the school district,” said Gerard O’Sullivan, superintendent of Norwich City Schools. “These young scholar-athletes should be proud of this academic accomplishment”.
To be eligible for consideration, an athlete must maintain a grade point average (GPA) greater than 96 percent. Eligible participants were evaluated based on their GPA, individual achievements, and involvement in academic or other activities.
In 2010, approximately 400,000 children participated in Pop Warner nationally. There were 280 first team, 5,000 second team and 2,000 honorable mention members selected in the entire country.
Since 1980, the Cyclones have had five first team all-Americans, 60 second team, and 15 honorable mention award winners. In 1980, the Cyclones were named the Midget National Champion Scholar team.
Norwich Pop Warner sign-ups will be held May 11-12 at the Norwich YMCA from 7 to 9 p.m.
