Arbor Day poster exhibit at 6 On The Square in Oxford
OXFORD – An Arbor Day Exhibit will be taking place at 6 On The Square (6OTS), the community music and arts center located at 6 LaFayette Park. On Saturday, May 1, while Oxford’s Arbor Day celebration is taking place, Arbor Day poster entries by students of Art Instructor, Charity Gipp of Oxford Academy’s 5th grade will be on exhibit in the venue, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
“Trees are Terrific…and Energy Wise!” was the theme of the 2010 Arbor Day poster competition. Sixteen students entered the contest following the guidelines for the National Arbor Day poster contest sponsored by Toyota. On exhibit will be posters by: Lauren Anthony, Dallas Beang, Autumn Brewer, Katelyn Diamond, Raigen Ehly, Jaret Gates, Jacob Ingraham, Nicole Ingraham, Joseph Knoll, Dustin Mack, Harry Oliver, Shawn Peck, Holly Roach, Bryan Towndrow, Corey Turner, and Jacob Warren.
The Oxford Village Tree Board, who sponsored the contest on the local level, made the winning announcements on January 22. The winners are, in third place: Raigen Ehly; in second place: Dustin Mack; and in first place: Jaret Gates.
These winners will be receiving prizes by the Oxford Village Tree Board at the Arbor Day celebration which begins at 9 a.m., at the LaFayette Park bandstand. Their principal, Kathleen Hansen said that she would accompany the students in the Park that morning and that the students are planning to read a lovely poem to the crowd along with quotes from famous people about trees. The poems and quotes will focus on what trees do for our world.
Jaret Gates’ award winning, original poster will not be available in time for this exhibit as it is at the NYS DEC Division of Lands and Forests in Albany. A printed reproduction of Jaret’s poster has been generously provided by Rapid Reproductions LLC of Oxford.
The Oxford Historical Society will also have a small exhibit of old photos depicting trees as seen in the Village in the early 1900s.
6 On The Square is a volunteer-based community service organization committed to promoting music and the arts in central New York by offering cultural and educational programs.
