Bonnell wins showdown in 100 meters

Track and Field

NORWICH – Sarah Bonnell ran the best 100 meters of her life, and she needed to do it facing Section IV recordholder Katie Woodford.
Bonnell did not beat Woodford a season ago, and Woodford had recently established a new Section IV record in the event earlier this past week at Unadilla Valley High School.
In the finals at the REK Invitational Saturday night, Bonnell had an explosive start to lead by a couple of paces at the 30-meter mark, and held that lead to set a new meet record timing 12.3 seconds to nip Woodford by three-tenths of a second. Bonnell added a meet record in the long jump helping the Tornado girls to a first-place finish in the nine-team event scoring 149 points to best Greene by 54.
“Amazing,” summed up Bonnell of her feelings after the win. “I try to reach out for the number (at the start), and I was able to get it today. I usually listen for the breathing of the runners behind me, and I didn’t hear (Katie).”
The Tornado boys were even more impressive on the day racking up 217 points to more than double second-place Greene, who came in with 86.
Norwich set six of the 11 meet records recorded on the day. Max Morse, Cameron turner, Josh Favaloro, Kyle Acenowr, and Morgan Crawford all were credited with at least two meet records either in a relay or an individual event.
Greene junior Chad Noelle had no one in his rearview mirror. Noelle, named the top male performer of the meet, set two individual meet records in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races, and was the anchor on the winning 1,600-meter relay team that also set a meet record.
Noelle, a state place finisher last year, shaved two seconds off his best time to win the 1,600 in 4:16.4. “I was aiming to go below 4:25, but once I heard the first two splits, I decided to go for my PR (personal record),” Noelle said, who credited B-GA coach Robb Munro’s contributions during the winters months to help him build strength.
Unadilla Valley senior, Tyler Foulds, also set two new meet records capturing the discus (132-7) and shot put (44-8).
Elsewhere, Greene freshman, Rebecca Smith established meet standards in the 100- hurdles and 400-meter hurdles timing 16.1 and 1:11.6. Oxford’s Emily Woodford took two events – the 200 meters and triple jump – setting a meet record in the latter with a distance of 35-2.
