Oxford finishes week on high note

OXFORD – Coming off back-to-back lopsided losses, Oxford finished out the week on the upswing beating Bainbridge-Guilford on Friday.
Locked in a 1-1 tie, Oxford scored six in the third inning. Andrew Golden’s sacrifice fly scored the go-ahead run, four runs scored on passed balls or errors, and Krys Escobar added an RBI single.
“We put the ball in play, and they got a little wild in the third,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “It was nice to be on the other side of that.”
Jamie Smolcnop hit a two-run homer in the fourth for Oxford to support Golden, who won his first varsity game. Golden allowed one earned run in six innings striking out seven and allowing two hits.
Kyle Ferrington had two hits and three stolen bases in the win, and Escobar was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Cody Lake led B-G with three hits, and Billy Holden had a two-run double in the seventh.

MORRISVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville broke a scoreless tie scoring six runs in the top of the fifth, and Mike Wilson pitched six innings to earn the win for the Marauders Friday.
With two runners on, Joe Moses hit a two-out single to put the first two runs on the board. One inning later, Corey Musician’s bunt single drew a throwing error allowing two more runs to score.
Wilson held M-E in check until the sixth inning, and struck out eight.
Carter Cole, Jobie Gage, and Jake Bohnert all had two hits for the Marauders, who play at Canastota Monday.

NEW BERLIN – Coming off a disheartening loss to the Bulldogs the day before, UV put that defeat to rest in a hurry with Friday’s impressive victory.
Ian Davis doubled and drove in three runs to lead the UV attack. Mike Fitch and John Lopez also had two hits. “We had the mentality that we should have won the game (Thursday), and we came out pretty fired up,” said UV coach Tom Locke.
Brandon Miles pitched six strong innings for the victory allowing just one run. UV’s defense helped the cause with just one error, while Delhi made six errors on defense and four different pitchers combined to issue eight base on balls.
UV (3-5) plays at Greene today.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS – The Raiders took advantage of three Remsen errors in the first inning to score five runs, and after a five-run lead dwindled to one, tacked on six runs in the fifth thanks to four more Remsen errors in Saturday’s Richfield Springs Tournament title game.
“They were able to come back to within 6-5, but we weren’t worried because we know we can hit,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson.
Brendan Zucchi, Corin Todd, and Andrew Delmar all had two hits in the win. Zucchi and Todd put up two RBI apiece.
Alex Schmidt went seven innings for the win, and struck out the final two batters in the seventh to cap the tourney.
Friday, G-MU recovered from a 3-0 deficit to win its opening game against host Richfield Springs.
Zucchi’s double drove in two runs to tie the game in the third. Zucchi then had a steal of home for the go-ahead run. Ian Edwards added an RBI triple one inning later.
The Raiders fell behind by three committing four errors, and Richfield Springs put all four of its runs on the board in the opening three innings without a hit.
Delmar struck out eight for the victory. “The errors were plays we probably should have made, but Andrew was able to settle down and we played better as the game went on,” Johnson said.

NEW BERLIN – Friday, Unadilla Valley scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally for its second win in as many days over the Bulldogs.
Delhi made four of its five errors in the sixth inning, and three UV runs came in on wild pitches. Kara Collins and Carly Beadle had RBI hits during the inning. “Our baserunning was the difference today,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “We were stealing bases, and we made them throw the ball around.”
Collins had two hits and two runs scored, and Hannah Benson was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Sam Madden picked up the victory as UV improved to 2-6 overall.

WINDSOR – Windsor had a much more difficult time with Norwich in the second meeting this season.
Shelly Tucker’s RBI sacrifice fly in the opening inning was the lone run of the game as the Black Knights (8-0, 11-1), ranked number two in the state, kept their STAC slate clean.
“It was probably our best defensive game of the season,” said Norwich coach Dennis Eaton. “The pitching and defense were great. We proved that we can be in any game if those things are working well.”
Windsor put a dozen runs on the board against the Tornado in an opening-game victory four weeks ago. This time, NHS pitchers Ashley Campbell and Jamie Berger were much more effective. Campbell allowed just one hit in five innings of work, and Berger threw two scoreless innings. Infielders Skye Ingraham (shortstop) and Shelby Condon (third base) were responsible for 11 putouts in the contest.
