Delmar pitches G-MU to win over No. 1 Milford
Baseball
G-MU 4, Milford 0
MILFORD – Early-season state rankings are highly subjective, nonetheless; G-MU dealt the state’s number one ranked Class D school its first loss of the season on Monday.
“It’s a big win for us, and it takes a little bit of the pressure off in division play,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson after beating the Wildcats.
Andrew Delmar, who pitched a seven-inning complete game last Friday, allowed just two hits in a shutout performance. Delmar faced the absolute minimum number of batters. Of Milford’s four baserunners, two were picked off by Delmar, and the other two were erased by double plays. Delmar allowed just two hits – the first two batters of the game – striking out seven and walking two.
Offensively, the Raiders scored four runs in the fifth benefiting from three Milford errors. Jon Scofield and Corin Todd had RBI groundouts to complete the scoring.
Alex Schmidt had two hits for the Raiders (7-1).

CANASTOTA – Canastota turned a triple play to end one S-E rally, and snuffed out two other potential uprisings with double plays in a victory over the Marauders Monday.
Canastota scored the eventual winning runs in the fifth. After S-E hurler Joe Moses struck out the first two batters, a dropped fly ball led to Billy Marsh’s go-ahead single. An insurance tally came in on another error. “We played great baseball, just a couple of errors cost us,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks.
The Marauders’ defense turned two double plays, and Moses was effective giving up six hits in six innings. Mike Wilson added two hits in the loss. “We put the ball in play, things just didn’t go our way today,” Hicks said.

GREENE – Unadilla Valley recovered from a four-run deficit after four innings with back-to-back four-run innings in the fifth and sixth to edge Greene on Monday.
UV tied the game in the fifth when Ian Davis’s infield grounder was misplayed allowing two runners to score. In the sixth, Brandon Miles tied the game with an RBI hit, and the go-ahead run came in on another Trojans error. “They say that good things can happen if you put the ball in play, and UV put the ball in play,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “It was a disappointing performance for us. When we were not making errors, we were missing the cutoff man...we were just giving away bases.”
Matt Jones was 3-for-3 on the Greene side, Alex Kenyon went 3-for-4, and Brendan Kinne had two hits.
Zach Montgomery had two hits for the Storm.

AFTON – Harpursville’s Chad Baxter struck out 10 and tossed a three-hit shutout to outduel Afton hurler Adam Rupakus Monday night.
Rupakus was the hard-luck loser allowing a single unearned run. He struck out eight and walked just one. “We just have not been giving Adam offensive support, and he’s pitched some great games this season,” said Afton coach Ron Rapp. “He always seems to pitch against the other team’s ace.”
Afton’s lone run came in the third inning. Jared Decker drew a two-out walk, and Ryan Dalpiaz extended the inning reaching on an infield error. Mason Dean drove in Decker with a single for the game’s only tally.

“I may be hard to see, but (our success) is definitely a team effort this year,” said Greene coach Rick Smith, whose club is now 10-1 on the season. “We’re averaging just one error a game, and I’ll take that. Louise Holcomb made some nice plays today at third base, and Brittany (Youngs) has played solid defense at catcher all season. We’re also getting people on base for Rebecca when she’s batting.”
