Athlete of the Week: Kyle Acenowr
Paul Sims, the fourth-year head coach of Norwich’s boys track field team, said senior Kyle Acenowr is the type of athlete every team needs.
“I’ve talked to Kyle numerous times over the years, and I tell him, ‘I need you to do this today,’” Sims said. “He tells me, ‘whatever you need coach.’
“That’s the type of kid you want on your team. He always puts the team before himself, and he’s really stepped into a leadership role this year.”
Acenowr is the sort who will not get in teammates’ faces with the aim of firing them up or raising their intensity. He will occasionally pipe up to a teammate if he feels that person is not giving 100 percent effort or is slacking off. Mostly, Acenowr goes out and performs in practice the same way he does in meets: Always with 100 percent commitment and effort.
Coming off a solid indoor track and field season, Acenowr has continued to improve in his senior season. In the last week, he has set personal-best times in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes, and is the top senior points scorer on a Norwich team that has clinched its first dual meet winning record in many years.
