Norwich police catch school burglar in the act
NORWICH – City Police officers responding to a complaint of a disorderly man along Midland Drive were searching the area for the subject when they spotted a burglar through a window inside the Norwich Middle School.
Police responded to a call of a disorderly man walking down Midland Drive at about 3:50 a.m. Sunday morning. When a patrol arrived and began searching the street for the subject, one of the officers noticed a broken window leading into the Norwich City Middle School.
As the officer approached the broken window to investigate, he saw through the glass a man wearing dark clothes looking back at him just inside the building.
The officer shouted an order for the man to stop, but the suspect immediately fled from the patrol to the interior of the building, reported Norwich Police Sgt. Gard Turner, who was the officer in charge of the shift at the time.
“Officers attempted to locate the male inside the middle school, but he fled when they attempted to make contact with him,” said Turner.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police also responded to help in the search of the building. Within 15 minutes of spotting the man and conducting a search of the school, police encountered the alleged burglar just outside the building. Again, the man fled on foot and a brief chase ensued, with officers eventually tackling him.
Police charged 19-year-old Jonas Parmeter of 4206 South Lebanon Road, Lebanon, with third degree burglary, a class D felony, over the incident. Police claim Parmeter broke several other windows and damaged additional school property while inside the building.
He was arraigned in Norwich City Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail. Police said they expect additional charges to be filed in the case.
