Sherburne Earlville budget discussion this evening
SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville School district budget for the 2010/2011 school year will be presented at a board of education meeting at 6:30 this evening in the middle/high school auditorium.
The $28,975,880 million budget represents a 3.73 percent increase from the prior year and a 1.99 percent tax hike. It reflects a loss of up to seven staff members, including four teachers who will retire and not be replaced.
The budget saves a total of $370,180 in salary reductions and $66,000 in benefits. Ongoing administrative restructuring discussions led to replacing the district’s instructional technology department administrator, Todd Griffin, with a teacher, and moving Griffin into retiring district’s Assistant Superintendent Thomas Strain’s position, but at a lower salary.
In addition to voting for or against the budget, district residents will have the opportunity to cast their votes May 18 for candidates to fill three positions on the board. Originally, four candidates registered their positions, but newcomer John Cook Jr. of Smyrna pulled out of the race.
Those running are incumbents Patrick Dunshee of Earlville and Thomas Morris of Sherburne and Daniel Piliero of Earlville. Newcomer Piliero is a retired teacher and former 35-year internal auditor for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He said he looked forward to bringing his experience as a parent, employee, teacher and government auditor to the board.
