Norwich wrestlers finish 'great season'

NORWICH – “What a great year for wrestling in the Norwich area,” said Norwich Pee Wee Wrestling coach Tim Scheer.
Scheer was referencing – in part – Norwich seventh-grader Tristan Rifanburg, who wrestled for the pee wee program, and went on to become the first state champion in Norwich history this past winter.
As for the junior wrestlers, coached by Scheer, Kevin Slater, and Toby Franklin among others, the team began its season in early November with 82 kids, and ended the season several months later with 66 still practicing regularly with the team. During the season, Norwich competed at 16 different tournaments and averaged around 30 kids per tournament, up from 24 kids per tournament a year ago. “There were 30 to 40 kids this year who finished the season with anywhere from 50 to 80 matches,” Scheer said. “That’s an excellent number. We have a tremendous amount of kids who are exceptional wrestlers who have done excellent this year and will fare very well in the years to come. We have excellent parent support for our program, and I hope this trend continues as it is the best it has ever been.”
Scheer said that parental support is critical for any program to thrive and survive. “Parents are the ones bringing their kids to practice, driving them to tournaments, and sacrificing their weekends to give their kids the mat time needed to improve,” Scheer said.
Norwich finished among the top three in points at every team tournament, and was typically vying for the first- or second-place team trophy. After the season, 14 kids from Norwich earned trips to the Eastern Nationals qualifier in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, a record number for Norwich. Earning bids were Tristan Rifanburg, Tanner Cummings, Cody Bradbury, Frankie Garcia, Landon Cummings, Nick Murphy, Nate Scheer, Cole Rifanburg, Dalen Geislinger, Ty Rifanburg, Zack Mills, Eli Rodriguez, Troy Sprately and Griffin Mills.
Of those 14, seven qualified for the trek to Maryland for the national event, six of whom made the trip. Placing were Tristan Rifanburg (first), Brennan Slater (third), Frankie Garcia (fourth), Eli Rodriguez (fourth), and Troy Sprately (fifth) Cole Rifanburg also made the trip, but ran into tough competition and did not place.
“This was one of the best years Norwich junior wrestling has ever had, and I am looking forward to more years like this in the near future,” Scheer said.
Scheer added that coaching of the young wrestlers is critical to the development of the program, while also allowing each kid to learn as much as possible. He invites anyone who can offer assistance to the wrestling program to come out next year and help build the winning tradition for Norwich.
“I am very proud of all of these kids, and they should be proud to say they wrestle for Norwich,” Scheer said.
