ONEONTA – Norwich avenged its worst loss this season beating the STAC Central Division champion Yellowjackets on their own diamond Friday night.
Norwich, losers to the ‘Jackets, 29-9, during spring break did not trail in the game, but saw Oneonta rally to tie the game with four runs in the sixth. Nate Eastman’s three-run homer made it a 7-7 game.
Norwich responded in the bottom of the seventh as Josh Whaley doubled, and Casey Edwards was inserted as a pinch-runner for Whaley. Richie Bonney’s long flyball to right center found a gap in the Oneonta defense to score Edwards with the winning run.
“We just beat the division champs, and this proves that when we put things together and play good ball, we can compete with anyone in our league,” said Norwich coach John Martinson.
Whaley pitched two innings of relief for his third win of the season and Norwich’s fourth overall. Bonney was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Nick McCullough drove in two runs for Norwich.
Eastman had two hits and four RBI for Oneonta.
Norwich plays at Windsor today.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley sent 18 men to the plate in the sixth inning plating 12 runs to defeat Stockbridge Valley Friday.
The Vikes, despite a losing record and with just five wins, have now beaten two of the top teams in the Central Counties League. Previously, OV (5-6) beat number two Brookfield. “We haven’t had a real great season and we have a lot of new kids,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We’re showing signs of becoming a good team. The kids feel good, and couple more wins, we’ll give sectionals a try.”
During the sixth, OV had just four hits benefiting from six Stockbridge walks and five errors. Karl Graham and Trevor Marston had RBI hits during the frame and each finished 2-for-2.

Muller struck out 15, walked five, and gave up three hits in a shutout win. Muller also drove in both Afton runs with an RBI single in the first and a fielder’s choice groundout in the third. “He worked out of trouble a couple of times, but for the most part, he was in control,” said B-G coach Pete Mansheffer of Muller.
Lake allowed three hits as well fanning four and walking none. “Cody mixed his pitches well and the defense played well behind him,” Mansheffer said.

DELHI – Delhi scored a single run in the fifth inning, and pitcher Ben Sandman threw six innings of shutout ball in the Bulldogs’ win over Oxford Friday.
J.J. Darling tripled in the fifth with two outs, and he scored on Ethan Sackett’s double.
Oxford’s biggest – and only – offensive threat came in the first when it loaded the bases with one out. Sandman induced a foul out and a ground out to work out of the jam, and he allowed just one hit the rest of the way. He finished with nine whiffs and no walks.
Kyle Ferrington struck out four and walked none for the Blackhawks (6-11). “It was a well-pitched game and a good game defensively for both teams,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “Sandman did a nice job; we couldn’t get the bats going.”
Oxford is slated for a non-league game at Norwich on Thursday.

ONEONTA – Oneonta, 9-1 winners over Norwich earlier in the week, needed a two-run fifth inning to nip the Purple Tornado Friday afternoon.
Katie Bredin had an RBI single, and scored the second run on Haley Dower’s fielder’s choice bunt for the final margin of victory.
“We were ready to play from the first inning,” said Norwich coach Dennis Eaton. “We didn’t do too badly, just not good enough for the win.”
Norwich closed the gap to one run when Skye Ingraham doubled in Sophie Stewart. Norwich had runners on second and third in the inning when Dower, playing right field, snagged a sharp line drive in the gap for the final out.
Lesley Harley had 10 strikeouts and one walk for Oneonta, nine of those whiffs coming in the first four innings. “It was definitely a competitive game, and the Oneonta coaches told me they were happy to get away with the win,” Eaton said.
Jamie Berger struck out five, walked none, and gave up five hits for Norwich, who play at Owego today.
