High School senior to compete in Oneonta Idol finals

NORWICH – This Friday, Norwich High School senior Shannon Stark will have an opportunity to bring home something which has eluded her since last spring – a first place finish in the Oneonta Junior Idol finals.
Stark, who will graduate in June, first competed in the Oneonta-based vocal contest in 2009, but admitted that nerves got the best of her that year.
“I didn’t do well when I performed last year,” stated Stark. “I was just too nervous and too stiff.”
Since then, Stark said she’s grown dramatically, improving on her acting abilities, something she credits with boosting her confidence this time around.
Norwich High School Choir Director Mary Mayo agreed, and said she believed Stark’s three years in the choir and madrigal programs have helped her to “make steady progress during that time.”
“Her work with us here has done a lot to give her confidence in her voice,” added Mayo. “It’s exciting for her to achieve this goal at this point in her life. She’s a very versatile young lady and she has a legitimate voice.”
Stark, who came to Norwich from the Unadilla Valley School District in tenth grade, said she plans to audition for the next season of American Idol, and cited the popular television program as “a big influence.”
The Oneonta Junior Idol finals share a similar format with the nationally televised talent competition, and Friday will find Stark performing two musical selections, Gretchen Wilson’s “Redneck Woman,” and Evanescence’s “Bring Me To Life.”
“I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember,” said Stark, who wished to thank her family and friends for their ongoing support. “I just know it’s something I’m good at, so why waste a good talent?”
“I’m extremely excited,” added Stark. “I just want to get it over with and see how I do.”
“I’ve got to give it to her,” said Mayo. “She presents an excellent vocal style.”
The Oneonta Junior Idol finals will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Oneonta Elks Lodge, 86 Chestnut St. Food will be available and admission is free for all ages. For more information contact Carla Balnis at 432-1030.
