45th annual Antique Car Show this weekend
NORWICH – Between 8,000 and 10,000 spectators are expected to visit the Chenango County Fairgrounds this weekend as the Rolling Antiquers’ Old Car Club kicks off its 45th annual Antique Auto Show and flea market Saturday.
Featured once again this year will be the traditional mix of antique and muscle cars, motorcycles, street rods, antique engines and military vehicles, said Rolling Antiquers Vice President Sewain Conklin, who reported Saturday’s show will focus on the street rods, muscle and sports cars, while Sunday will feature antique and classic automobiles.
“It looks like we’re going to have quite a full show on both days this year,” stated Conklin, who added pre-registration is up this year, most likely due to the favorable weather forecast and an improving economy.
In addition, Conklin reported a marked increase in vendors this year, as compared to the last few years.
While the majority of car enthusiasts and spectators hail from the northeast, Conklin commented that it’s not unusual to see a wide variety of out-of-state license plates at the event, from as far away as Colorado, Florida and California.
“We always have some folks that come very long distances for the show,” said Conklin. “It’s the nature of our show and the quality of the cars that come here to be shown and judged.”
“Primarily, it’s all about the cars,” he added.
As in past years, a free shuttle bus service to and from the show will be provided by First Transit, and Conklin reported the inclusion of the Howard Johnson parking lot as a pick up location, in addition to the High School and County Office Building parking lots.
Tonight, the Norwich Merchants Association and Business Improvement District kicks things off with a Cruise-In around East and West Parks from 6 to 8 p.m.
The 45th annual Antique Auto Show will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine, at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. Food, beverages and camping will be available both days, and admission is $5. There is no admission for children under the age of 12.
