Greene man charged in friend's weekend death

SMITHVILLE – New York State Police are investigating an alcohol-related incident in the Town of Smithville which left one young man dead and another charged with criminally negligent homicide over the weekend.

At around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, 20-year-old Philip J. Stacy of Greene fell from the back bumper of a Chevy Suburban while heading up a hill along Round Pond Road.

“(He) was treated by members of the Greene and Smithville EMS and was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained in the fall,” reported police Sunday afternoon.

State Police Investigator Jason Bessett said three other people were in the vehicle at the time of the incident, including the allegedly intoxicated driver, Ethan J. David, 22, of Greene.

David was charged with criminally negligent homicide, first degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle – both Class E felonies – and misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.
