Weight Watchers meeting at Norwich Family YMCA
NORWICH – The Norwich Family YMCA began hosting a Weight Watchers meeting on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. beginning Mid-April. Both organizations aim to create a long-term, healthy lifestyle relationship to benefit Chenango County residents. Starting in April, local Weight Watchers participants began utilizing the YMCA facilities for a weekly meeting. “We are extremely pleased to have the Weight Watchers community join us here at the YMCA,” said James Mullen, executive director of the Norwich Family YMCA.
For more than 45 years, Weight Watchers has been assisting individuals with weight-loss goals through teaching healthy eating habits, modifying behaviors, exercising and providing support. For its part, the Norwich Family YMCA has been promoting healthy lifestyles locally for over 145 years. “Separately, these two organizations have helped thousands of local residents achieve weight-loss and fitness goals. To provide what each has to offer will be a perfect combination,” said Shannon Gawronski, the Norwich Family YMCA’s Health and Fitness Director.
To pursue fitness goals without a solid nutritional and dietary plan often yields poor results over the long term, Gawronski explained. “Short-term weight-loss competitions provide some benefit, but once the incentives disappear, inches around the waistline can easily reappear,” said Gawronski. In order to sustain any weight loss achievement, or to maintain a healthy condition, individuals need a life plan that they can follow and enjoy year in and year out, Gawronski continued.
“Individuals will experience the benefits from Weight Watchers expertise and have the option of utilizing the variety of exceptional facilities here at the YMCA,” said Jamey Mullen. Ideally, participants who seek personal training at the Norwich Family YMCA will also have the option of joining Weight Watchers, which will complement their long-term fitness goals, Mullen explained.
“This is a win-win situation,” said Weight Watchers’ Norwich Leader Jo Anne Eppley-Wells. “By offering its group fitness rooms, gym, pool, indoor track, and courts for exercise, the Norwich Family YMCA offers Weight Watchers participants an option to enjoy meeting one of the critically important parts of our program – getting/staying more active,” Eppley-Wells continued.
The Weight Watchers meeting at the YMCA began in Mid-April, just about the time many people begin backsliding from their New Year’s resolutions, Mullen suggested. “This unique approach to healthy living is a fitting means of continuing the Norwich Family YMCA’s longstanding mission of helping Chenango County residents improve their quality of life,” said Mullen.
On Sunday, June 6., Weight Watchers members will be walking in the 2nd Annual Weight Watchers 5k Walk-It Challenge Day. Members have been training since April. Some will be walking a 5k for the 1st time. Members will walk either at Weiler Park or on the indoor track at the Norwich Family YMCA, at 1 p.m.
