Greene advances to sectional finals

Greene 1, Elmira Notre Dame 0
ELMIRA – Greene earned a return visit to the Section IV, Class C finals shutting out top-seeded Elmira Notre Dame Thursday afternoon.
It was the second straight year the Trojans (19-3) blanked the Crusaders by a 1-0 count. Sophomore pitcher Rebecca Hanrahan struck out 16, and worked out of bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh to secure the victory.
“It was just amazing, I think we went to another level higher than what we played in the Tioga game (last Tuesday),” said Greene head coach Rick Smith. “Today is the first time the word ‘warrior’ came to my mind to describe Becca.”
The Crusaders’ first two batters in the seventh reached on hits, and the next hitter bunted down to Greene third baseman Louise Holcomb. Holcomb was advised to hold the ball to protect against any bad throws, while also creating a potential force-out at any base.
Hanrahan got the first out when she fielded a grounder and threw to catcher Brittany Youngs for the force at home. She fanned the next hitter, and struck out the last batter on a three-two count to end the thrilling contest.
Eariler in the game, Hanrahan notched her third strikeout of the game to reach 500 for her varsity career. Hanrahan also singled in the second inning to ignite the Trojans’ only scoring offense of the day.
Jahna Driscoll was inserted to pinch-run for Hanrahan, and she moved from first to third on back-to-back bunts. A wild pitch allowed the speedy Driscoll to score the game’s lone tally.
Notre Dame threatened to score in the fourth inning when Olivia May singled and stole second. Two outs later, END clean-up hitter Taylor Drake hit a soft looping drive to short centerfield that was destined to become an RBI single. Greene second baseman Stephanie Stahl tracked the ball, and made a leaping back-handed catch for the final out of the inning.
“It was a great play and Stephanie has probably saved three or four games for us with her defense,” Smith said. “She got a great jump, she has great footwork, and just got to the spot.”
Greene will face Seton Catholic Central on Saturday afternoon at the BAGSAI softball complex for its first sectional softball title. “I’ve seen (Seton Catholic Central) play a couple of times, and they live on making the other team make mistakes,” Smith said. “They play a clean game and they play hard. We have to be aware of their bunts.”
The starting time for the championship game was not available at press time.
