Pharsalia can't be forced to open compensation deal

NORWICH – Responding to a request for interpretation, Chenango County Attorney Richard W. Breslin gave the nod to the Town of Pharsalia to decide for itself whether or not to renegotiate a benefits package that compensates the town for hosting the county’s landfill.

Wording of the 1996 contract stipulates that it can only be renegotiated upon request of the town, and not so ordered by another town nor the county. Finance Committee Chairman Lawrence Wilcox, R-Oxford, shared Breslin’s statement with his committee on Thursday.

In response, Pharsalia Supervisor Dennis Brown, who is vice chairman of Finance, said he “would be happy” to bring the matter before his town board, indicating with a smile on his face that he had no doubt that they wouldn’t want to open the contract for possible revision.
