Two-car collision sends 7 to hospital
NORWICH – Two cars collided in a high speed crash in the Town of Norwich Thursday sending seven people to the hospital and entrapping one of the drivers.
One of the vehicles involved in the crash had six teenager occupants.
The accident occurred at about 2:46 p.m. yesterday at the intersection of County Road 36 and Aldrich Road
The Norwich Fire Department was on the scene in about four minutes and discovered Norwich resident Nancy Williams pinned inside her red sedan.
Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo said crews were forced to use the Jaws of Life to pry Williams from the wreckage. She was immediately flown by the Life Net of New York helicopter, based in Sidney, to Wilson Regional Medical Center in Binghamton with “serious” unknown injuries. Representatives at Wilson reported that Williams was in the hospital’s intensive care unit Friday morning.
Emergency crews first arriving at the scene also discovered a number of teens crawling from the back of the Subaru sedan, which flipped over onto its roof during the crash.
A local Norwich resident who lives on the corner of Oxford Road and County Rt. 36, near the scene, ran outside after she heard the collision.
“I didn’t see the accident. I just saw what happened after,” said the woman, who asked to not have her name published. “I saw the car in the depression and there were two kids crawling out the back, then a few more crawled out. They had blood running down their faces.”
The resident then left her house to help direct traffic until more responders could arrive.
Chenango Sheriff’s Sgt. Timothy Urnaitis reported that the driver of the Subaru was a 17 year-old Norwich youth and five other passengers in the vehicle were Norwich High School students. The driver and four of the passengers between the ages of 15 and 16 were taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
A fifth passenger, 18-year-old Nick McCullough, was taken by ambulance to Wilson with more serious injuries. The hospital reported he had been discharged by Friday morning.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident, but said it appeared the teen’s vehicle traveled through a stop sign on Aldrich Road and into the path of Williams who was heading north on County Rd. 36. Urnaitis said tickets may be issued following the police investigation.
A witness traveling in an unrelated vehicle at the time of the accident reported to police that the Subaru passed through the stop sign without stopping.
The Norwich and the Guilford FD along with Cooperstown Medical Transport responded to the incident. The Sherburne, Preston and Oxford departments provided support
