Norwich man killed in Sunday morning accident

NORWICH – Early Sunday morning crews rushed to the scene of a fatal car accident after a passenger in the crash pulled herself free and ran to get help.
Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matthew Beckwith said the Norwich and Preston Fire Departments then found a Toyota Celica Coupe down an embankment with the driver ejected from the vehicle.
The accident occured at around 6:16 a.m. Sunday along County Road 10a in the Town of Preston.
Beckwith said a female passenger in the car pulled herself from the vehicle and ran to a nearby residence to call 911.
The driver, Stephen E. Dicks, 24, of Norwich, was later pronounced dead at Chenango Memorial Hospital by the County’s Medical Examiner, Dr. John Cruz.
Beckwith said Dicks was ejected from the car’s rear window and struck a tree, suffering major head and neck trauma.
The female passenger, who has not been identified, was also taken to CMH with unknown injuries.
Emergency crews requested air support from both helicopter providers in the area, but they reported could not respond due to dangerous thunder and lightening storms.
The New York State Police are investigating the incident and no further details have been released.
