NORWICH – Too many young people don’t care about government, according to James Zieno of Norwich, and with the formation of a local chapter for young Democrats, perhaps that will change, for both parties.

No stranger to politics, Zieno, who is 16, has actively campaigned for candidates and helped get the vote out as a participant with the Chenango County Democratic Committee over the past two years. He said he plans to major in political science in college and then go into politics.

He hopes a club for young Democrats will inspire Republican youths to get more involved, too.

“Even though the Republican Party outnumbers the Democrats by a large margin in Chenango County, they don’t have a club for young supporters either,” he said.

An information meeting is planned for organizing a New York State Young Democrats chapter in Chenango County on Wednesday, July 28, at Guernsey Memorial Library in Norwich. To be recognized as an official chapter, the group must number 15. While Zieno said he didn’t see that happening right away, it is his goal.
