Police find drugs following DWI stop in New Berlin
NEW BERLIN – Police charged a parolee with a number of drug-related crimes Monday after they pulled him over for a suspected drunk driving offense and discovered a large quantity of narcotics in his car.
New York State Police in Norwich arrested 24-year-old Luman C. Craver of Mt. Upton and charged him with third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a B class felony, driving while ability impaired by drugs and first degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, both E class felonies.
He was also charged seventh degree possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, and possession of a controlled substance outside the original container, a Public Health Law violation.
District Attorney Joseph McBride reported Thursday that Craver is currently on parole and the New York State Division of Parole is seeking to have him remanded to jail without bail for violating the terms of his release.
He also said the case involved prescription narcotic drugs and Craver is facing up to 9 years in state prison for the class B felony, if convicted.
Troopers pulled Craver over along County Road 29 in the Town of New Berlin. State Police implied the arrest was not a random incident in a released statement in which they credited “the New York State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET), Chenango County Sheriff’s Department and the Norwich City Police Department for assistance in the investigation.”
Craver was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 cash bail.
On Wednesday, June 23, CNET, in cooperation with the Town of New Berlin Police Department, the Sheriff’s Office and Norwich Police, stormed a residence in the Village of New Berlin arresting seven people for drug-related crimes, seizing heroin, marijuana, weapons and paraphernalia.
Police served a “no-knock” search warrant at around 5:50 a.m., at 43 North Main St. following a six-month-long investigation into local drug activity reported New Berlin officer-in-charge Sgt. Dominick Commesso at the time.
Police charged Adam Daring, 24, of 43 North Main St. and Courtney L. Champlin, 21, of New Berlin, with third and fifth degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, class B and D felonies respectively. They were also charged with first-degree criminal nuisance a class D felony, fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful growing of cannabis.
Daring was remanded on $5,000 cash bail and Champlin on $2,000 bail to the county jail.
The remaining five defendants were charged with misdemeanors and each was remanded to jail on bail amounts ranging from $1,000 to $500 by the New Berlin Town Court.
Following the arrest Commesso also said the investigation was continuing and more arrest may be pending in the case. Police would not confirm if the two incidents were related by press time Thursday.
