Norwich remains unbeaten in pony league

Norwich 9, Oxford 6
OXFORD – Norwich jumped out to an early lead, built the advantage to 7-0, and held off Oxford’s rally to remain unbeaten in Otsenango Pony League play on Thursday.
Robbie Wheeler had a two-run single to highlight Norwich’s three-run opening inning. Norwich (6-0) added three more runs in the third aided by four Oxford errors. Justin Lindenthaler’s single and ensuing two-base outfield error led to Norwich’s first run of the inning. John Yacano reached on an infield error to score the second run, and Cody Barnes’ long single to right-center upped the lead to six runs. Colby Griffin’s RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth gave Norwich a commanding lead.
Oxford battled back in the fourth and fifth scoring three runs in each inning. Jody Smith had an RBI single in the fourth, and Jeff Lawton, who led Oxford with three hits, stroked a two-run single in the fifth.
Norwich tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth with Wheeler’s RBI double the key blow.
Ben Barnes pitched four innings for the win striking out six. Justin Lindenthaler tossed three innings of relief for the save.

Unadilla Valley II 26, Cobleskill II 3
COBLESKILL – Unadilla Valley II scored in every inning including a 10-run third inning to rout Cobleskill II over five innings Thursday in the Otsenango Pony League.
Andrew Radke had two hits, three RBI, and five runs scored for UV. Will Martin, Eric Voorhis, and Brendan Brooker all had two hits as well with Brooker driving in three, and Voorhis matching Radke’s five runs scored.
Austin Taylor picked up the victory striking out eight and allowing four hits.

SHERBURNE – Defending Otsenango Pony League champion, Sherburne, swept a doubleheader from Bainbridge-Guilford Thursday evening.
Jessie Yerton and Elijah Morris each pitched two scoreless innings – allowing one hit – to blank the Braves. The lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when Anthony Palmer tripled, and he scored on Zachary Sampson’s sacrifice fly.
Sherburne benefited from 10 Bainbridge walks in the second game to pull away for the 11-run victory. Palmer pitched three innings of relief giving up four hits to earn the win. Starting pitcher Nathan Piazza struck out four and gave up one hit in two innings of work.
Greene 10, Edmeston 8
EDMESTON – Greene took advantage of several Edmeston errors and walks in the fifth inning scoring six runs to take the lead in Thursday’s Otsenango Pony League win.
Edmeston’s Gus Dane had a triple and a single to lead his club. Edmeston’s record fell to 0-5-1 on the season.
