Head-on crash leaves a 24-year-old Norwich woman dead
OXFORD – A head-on collision in the Town of Oxford claimed the life a 24-year-old Norwich woman Wednesday.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported that Andrea L. Armitage, of Fair Street, Norwich, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Chenango Memorial Hospital at around 5 p.m. yesterday.
The other driver involved in the crash, Jeanne M. Shear, 57, Benedict Rd., Bainbridge, was taken by ambulance to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City, “where she is listed with serious but non-life threatening injuries,” reported the Sheriff’s Office Thursday morning.
The accident was reported at 4:43 p.m. along County Rt. 32 (East River Road) about a hundred yards from the intersection of Lyon Brook Road near the Oxford and Norwich town lines.
Police said Armitage was traveling north and crossed the center line, striking Shear’s vehicle in the oncoming lane. The posted speed limit in the area of the accident scene is 55 miles per hour.
A woman traveling south on Rt. 32 one car behind Shear’s witnessed the accident and called 911.
Admittedly shaken by the incident, the witness asked not to be identified. “I guess I saw them hit, but I didn’t see much. The cars just jumped up into the air together and pieces went everywhere.”
First responders on the scene reported that Armitage was trapped inside her vehicle and the Oxford Fire Department freed her with the jaws of life.
Oxford’s EMS Ambulance also responded and called for emergency medical air support, but were forced to cancel the request after Armitage’s condition began deteriorating rapidly, according to information exchanged over the scanner at the time.
EMS officials at the scene confirmed that air crews could not perform CPR in the confined space of the helicopter and Armitage was taken to CMH. A few moments later, she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital’s emergency room.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but speed was determined not to be a factor, stated the sheriff’s office.
