NORWICH – Gus Macker participants will have the opportunity to save some cash at a number of local businesses over the weekend – if they’re sporting their Gus Macker wristbands, that is.

For a second consecutive year, area business owners have offered Macker players a discount on select items, a move many said they considered beneficial not only to their respective stores, but to the community and the tournament itself.

“I’m very community-minded and I like everybody to succeed, I want to see this wrist band project succeed and I want to see Gus Macker succeed,” said Sharon Jeffer, owner and operator of the Parson’s Daughter Candy Shoppe, 6 West Park Place, who will offer $1 Super Jaw Breakers to wristband-bearing athletes or anyone with a cutout of the Parson’s Daughter coupon from the Mackerville Gusette. “I think there are a lot of hidden treasures here in Norwich that people have an opportunity to find.”

While Jeffer decided to offer a specific product to prospective customers, Scott McLaughlin, owner of McLaughlin’s Department Store, 27 South Broad St., took a more uncategorical approach – participants in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament will enjoy $5 off any purchase over $50.
