GREENE — After winning the MAC championship game, the Greene Trojans boys’ soccer team began their sectionals run with a 7-0 shutout victory over Delhi. Greene earned the eighth seed in sectionals to get to host the first round on their turf.
Greene carried most of the possession and shots on goal. With much of the advantage, Greene saw opportunities from their young players with Jack Rice and Judd Dutcher getting a lot of the touches and breakaways. Also, carrying a big lead, their bench players earned some playing time and made great contributions as well in a full team effort win.
After going back and forth with Delhi on touches, Greene saw a great opportunity as Judd Dutcher crossed the ball to Gavin Ely for the score. The scoring play was set up by a great ball from Eli Eggleston. Jack Rice got a good hold of the ball under five minutes of the half with two back-to-back goals within seconds.
Rice also provided an assist on Ely’s second goal of the game with 11 seconds until halftime.
Greene took a 4-0 lead and was hungry for more in the second half.
Levi Pritchard saw a great opportunity pay off when he rebounded the ball off a shot and crashed the net halfway through the second half. After several shots that came close but didn’t sail in, Judd Dutcher had his first goal of the game with under 10 minutes to play. As more bench players came in with the game winding down, Greene thought they were satisfied but no, one more goal happened in the final two minutes of play. Caleb Tennant headed the ball and found Dillon Eichler close to the net to just kick it in for the final goal of the game.
Jackson Roth only had to make one save in goal in the win.
Greene travels to take on top seeded Seton Catholic on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
