NORWICH — In a battle between Deadpool and the Mandalorian, who wins? Both showed up at the Chenango County Fairgrounds last weekend for Norwich Fall Fest’s Comic Con and Movie Night, so fans could size up the matchup in person.
The two had plenty of company, joined by a Ghostbusters fan group from Rochester hunting for ghosts hidden around the grounds, a fan costumed competition, kids’ games and a Halloween movie in the exhibition hall. The Norwich Car Club also hosted a car show, with trophies and prizes.
It’s been a busy October at the fairgrounds. The Norwich Fall Festival has a different event every weekend this month, kicking off with an opening night of country music and a two day rodeo.
Coming weekends will feature rock concerts, swords and Halloween, Oct. 23-25 and Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
The Emerald Empire Detachment brings “Star Wars” characters to the fairgrounds on Oct. 24 and 25, staging scenes and posing for photos with visitors.
Salt City Historical Fencing is on the schedule both days too, with longsword and saber demonstrations and hands-on activities for anyone curious about historical swordsmanship.
Saturday night, the first Rocktober concert takes over the grandstand with Cruecified, a Mötley Crüe tribute band, and Kiss Alive!
Music starts at 5 p.m. After sunset, weather permitting, hot air balloons will light up against the night sky in a balloon glow visitors can watch and photograph from the grounds.
Find more information about the upcoming events on Immortal October’s facebook page and at norwichfallfest.com.
The following weekend on Halloween night, Saturday, Oct. 31, AZIF 90’s Band plays ’90s alternative rock, and SATO Ozzy Tribute, together with its original lineup since 1991, covers the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne. Bands start at 5 p.m.
Earlier in the day there is a family entry discount, and children who complete the festival’s activity circuit go home with a treat bag.
The midway runs all weekend. Families can go head-to-head on the blacklight miniature golf course, see who lasts longest on the mechanical bull or race side by side down the two-lane zip line. Climbing walls, bubble balls, inflatables, obstacle courses and games fill out the rest of the grounds.
Daytime programming under the Norwich Fall Fest name is aimed at families. Evenings, branded Immortal October, are for a slightly more mature audience. Sundays, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, are Family Fun Days with children’s activities, rides, games and food.
Both remaining weekends run 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the fairgrounds, 168 E. Main St.
Gate admission is free Fridays and Sundays and $5 Saturdays. Activity wristbands cost $20 to $25, depending on the day, and are valid during designated hours. The Rocktober concerts Oct. 24 and 31 carry an additional $10 grandstand charge. Parking is $5 per vehicle, with proceeds benefiting the United Way.
“We want it to be reasonable and enjoyable,” organizer Rex Layton.
Tickets and the full schedule are available at norwichfallfest.com.
“Get out there, enjoy the family, enjoy the fall, and really have a good time,” Layton said.
