OXFORD — Playing through a driving rain on a slick grass field, the Oxford Blackhawks girls soccer team put together a dominant offensive display on their home pitch, securing a commanding 8-1 victory over Walton-Downsville in the MAC consolation game just ahead of the Section IV tournament.
Oxford seized control from the opening whistle, immediately putting pressure on the Walton-Downsville backline. Just minutes into the contest, Emily Williams fired an early shot that was safely gathered by the goalkeeper. Moments later, Paige Rickard delivered a dangerous cross into the box, though it narrowly missed runners crashing the net.
The relentless attack finally broke through at the 35:47 mark of the first half. Williams slipped a crisp pass to Ahnalee Kappauf, who buried her chance to put the Blackhawks on the board.
Just 40 seconds later, Oxford struck again. Williams drove down the field and sent another precision pass into the scoring area. Though Williams' initial shot pulled just short, teammate Reese Tefft read the play perfectly, crashing the net to clean up the possession and double the lead to 2-0.
Oxford continued to dictate the tempo with crisp ball movement and sustained possession. Williams and Rickard kept the defense under constant pressure, with Rickard picking up a pair of assists on the afternoon.
The constant pressure paid off roughly ten minutes later when Jordan Palmer found the back of the net, extending the Blackhawks' lead to 3-0.
Before the first-half whistle blew, Oxford added one more exclamation point. With 14 minutes remaining until intermission, Jayne Fleury capped off the dominant opening frame with the first of her two goals on the day, sending Oxford into the break with a commanding 4-0 advantage.
The Blackhawks didn't let up after halftime, pouring on four more goals in the second half to put the game out of reach and cap the 8-1 rout. Fleury netted her second goal of the match, Williams tallied a goal to go with her assist, Jenna Denz chipped in a score, and Jordan Palmer picked up her second goal of the day to round out the high-powered offensive onslaught.
“The Coaching staff is so proud of tonight’s performance. Tonight’s game showcased an outstanding collective effort from the entire team. Every player competed with high intensity and a team-first mindset,” Coach Rachel Seiler said. “Our on-field communication was exceptional, marking one of our best performances of the season. We aim to carry this momentum, communication, and sharp shooting into Tuesday’s matchup at Elmira Notre Dame.”
